(NaturalNews) Most health-minded individuals understand the importance of regular physical activity to maintain optimal health and prevent a host of chronic diseases ranging from heart disease and diabetes to stroke and dementia. In the past, studies have suggested that regular exercise may reduce the risk of certain cancers, including breast cancer, but many questions have remained unanswered regarding activity duration, exercise type and intensity.
Researchers from the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health in Chapel Hill publishing in the journal CANCER have found that physical activity, either mild or intense and before or after menopause, may reduce breast cancer risk. As an aside, the scientists discovered that substantial weight gain may negate these benefits. The lead study investigator, Dr. Lauren McCullough and her team looked for a link between recreational physical activity, done at different time points in life, and the risk of developing breast cancer.
The study examined 1,504 women with breast cancer (233 noninvasive and 1,271 invasive) and 1,555 women without breast cancer who were 20 to 98-years-old. Participants were part of the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project, an investigation set up to review possible environmental causes of breast cancer. Researchers determined that women who exercised either during their reproductive or postmenopausal years had a reduced risk of developing breast cancer.
The study found that women who exercise between ten and nineteen hours per week experienced a 30 percent decrease in breast cancer risk. Risk levels were reduced regardless of duration or intensity, meaning that a rigorous workout was not necessary to achieve positive results. Exercise seemed to lower the risk of hormone receptor positive breast cancer (ER or PR positive), which is the most commonly diagnosed tumor type among American women.
The study team highlighted the finding that increased body weight increased overall risk of developing breast cancer, regardless of hours spent exercising. Clearly, physical activity is important to lower risk, but gaining weight can negate the effect and is an independent risk factor. Dr. McCullough concluded ?The observation of a reduced risk of breast cancer for women who engaged in exercise after menopause is particularly encouraging given the late age of onset for breast cancer.? A daily 30 minute walk and maintaining a healthy body weight provide a significant shield against this insidious disease.

They claim they can see a rain drop out to 2 kilometers.
Fine. Let that be our upper limit for angular diameter. We shall use the largest rain drop of.005m (5mm, but.005m for the sake of units) mentioned earlier to figure this out. We shall then use the angular diameter to figure out how far a golf ball has to be to be the same apparent size (angular diameter).
Using the large raindrop is our best bet for reality. It keeps us from pushing out the golf ball sphere to ridiculous distances.
Here, let's do some math.
Since unicode sucks here, it goes like this:
Angle = 2 x Arcsin(radius of sphere divided by distance)
For a flat circle, it's an arctan but we're not using a flat circle. At this distance and size of targets, it doesn't make much difference, but we're using the correct formula for formality's sake.
Angle = 2x Arcsin(.0025 / 2000m)
0.000143239 degrees, or about.5 seconds (take number, multiply by 3600)
A golf ball is 42.67mm in diameter at a minimum, but let's just truncate this for simplicity and readability, and the error makes the radius of detection smaller..042m/Sin (.00000413239/2) = 1164km
1164km = maximum effective range to detect a steel golf ball with this radar as long as you can detect the signal (for clarity, I am omitting signal strength and inverse-square law and what it does to detector size).
But then you say "read the article"
>With such small pulse volumes, it becomes possible to measure the properties of individual raindrops greater than 0.5mm
Their minimum raindrop is 1/10 smaller in diameter than the one used in this post. If I had put in.5mm in for calculating angular resolution, I would have pushed out the steel ball 10x the distance, a credulity straining distance.
Stealth is toast. It is obsolete.
QED.
Note: Please do not confuse angle of detection with beam width.
If you wake up to find the Splashtop Streamer widget on your PC or Mac begging to be updated, then it's probably worth it -- especially if you have a new iPad lying around. Splashtop 2 has been optimized to work with the Retina display, which makes it a cinch to squeeze your entire Windows or OS X desktop onto the 10-inch screen without it looking terrible. The system has also been redesigned to avoid the need to enter IP addresses, passwords, port numbers or Google account details. Instead, you'll create a new Splashtop 2 login that should work once across all your devices. The UI seems a lot friendlier, there's a new in-app purchase to "supercharge" network performance (edit: also required for connections outside of the same WiFi network if you're a new customer, see below), plus there's improved support for fluid video streaming at up to 30fps. (Alas, there's still no fullscreen support for Windows Media Center users though.) The new streamer and iPad app are available now, while the Android update should arrive soon. Want to see it in action? Head past the break for the promo video.
Update: We didn't fully appreciate this at first, but cross-network remote desktopping is no longer free to new customers. If you're coming to Splashtop for the first time, you have to make the in-app purchase ($1 per month or $10 per year) to enable "Anywhere Access." That said, the Splashtop 2 app for iPad is currently selling for $2 -- an 80 percent discount which largely compensates for the first year of charges.
A two-income American family with an average income?that dutifully invests in a 401(k) plan using typical strategies will lose $155,000 ? or about 30 percent of what they should have saved for retirement -- to Wall Street fees, according to a study by an economic justice advocacy organization.?
The Demos study, released last month, is just the latest in a long string of research showing 401(k) plans are a better deal for Wall Street than for you. Many show that people lose about one-third of their retirement money to fees that they don't even know they're paying. The actual lifetime impact of fees is a matter of widespread debate, but it shouldn?t be. In one dramatic example, John Bogle, the inventor of index funds, demonstrated how fees can consume 80 percent of an investor's money through something he?d dubbed ?the tyranny of compounding fees.? (Click on the link to see his proof.)
But some relief may be on the way. Regulations first set in motion in in 2007 (!) will finally kick in next week. Soon, 401(k) statements will include a fact box -- similar to the new info-boxes on credit card bills -- that lists the fee rates (?expense ratios?) associated with fund selections and shows in dollars how much the investor paid.
The disclosure box is a welcome change, but it's probably not going to make much of a difference, laments Robert Hiltonsmith, author of the Demos study.
"It will be underwhelming from a sticker shock point of view. It will not have the effect the doomsayers predict," Hiltonsmith said. The dollar amounts shown will reflect annual amounts, not the real harm from loss of compounding growth, he said.? A 27-year-old with $10,000 invested in a mutual paying a 1 percent expense ratio will pay only about $100 in fees in a year, a number that will hardly inspire shopping around, Hiltonsmith figures.
But that benign-sounding 1 percent annual fee is the source of most 401(k) folly. Compounded, it can result in loss of one-third of retirement savings, or more.
Doing the math to determine real investing costs from fees is tricky. It involves a long series of assumptions on factors so individualized that no 401(k) projection model is easily generalized.? Instead, the Demos study and others like it are merely "for instance ..." examples.
An obfuscator's dream Wall Street protectors use this to their advantage. The Investment Company Institute, which is critical of the Demos study and others like it, uses its own calculations to claim the average investor pays only $248 annually in 401(k) fees and $20,000 during their lifetime. Even that conservative estimate should be alarming, when the average 401(k) balances is $75,000, according to Fidelity Investments, and those close to retirement (ages 55-64) have an average balance of $100,000.
It doesn?t have to be hard to see how recurring fees devour much of your 401(k) money. Here's a simple, if slightly imprecise, way to think about what happens when someone takes 1 percent of your money every year.? If you had a dollar, and someone took one penny every year for 30 years, you'd only have 70 cents at the end. That's what investing in a 401(k) mutual fund does to your money. These fee losses are obscured by additional contributions you make, and by market ups and downs ? complex 401(k) statements are an obfuscator's dream -- but there's no way around it: Fees are killing most investors' returns.
(If you are a stickler for math, more precise calculations will appear at the bottom of this column. They usually just muddy the conversation, however.)
How does Wall Street get away with this? Obscurity sure helps, but there is another element of human nature that the system was born to exploit and that most people seem incapable of avoiding: Behavioral economists call it "hyperbolic discounting."? In short, Wall Street does a much better job of thinking about both time and money than you do.
Try this experiment, now oft repeated in the behaviorist world: If I offered you $50 today or $100 one year from now, which would you choose?? Most take the $50 and run.? Now, let's do the same exercise with a slight adjustment.? If I offered you $50 five years from now, or $100 six years from now, which would you pick? Almost certainly the $100.? ?But notice: if I asked you the same question in five years, you'd probably take the $50 again.? That?s a funny way to think about money (the technical term is ?dynamic inconsistency?).
The most obvious lesson from hyperbolic discounting is that people's choices are often focused on immediate gratification.? But the other side of that coin, behaviorists tell us, is that people are too quick to discount rewards in the future and, to our point, to discount the impact of future financial pain. In other words, telling someone they might be missing $150,000 from their retirement account 30 years from now means almost nothing to them ? they get angrier about a $35 overdraft fee taken last week from their bank account.? Wall Street's genius is this: By stealing people's money from the future, they avoid consumers' wrath.
Perhaps it's possible to educate all Americans on the tyranny of compounding investment fees; and creating a fact box on consumers' quarterly statements that inspires them to shop around for lower-cost mutual funds is a step in that direction. But behavioral economists say that's highly unlikely to make much of a difference.? Better to create a system that by default enters workers into low-cost, relatively safe investment vehicles and let them pick riskier, more expensive options if they wish, Hiltonsmith says.
?Even if there was more sticker shock, (workers) wouldn?t know what to,? he said. ?The way things are now, we?re asking workers to take on a full-time job, to be financial experts.?
Anyone who thinks the current system is working is doing an awful lot of hyperbolic discounting when it comes to society?s future.? Perhaps the most sobering fact in the Demos study, one that Hiltonsmith downplayed, is that his "perfect" investing couple had only $350,000 in their 401(k) at the end of 40 years. Does anyone think Mr. and Mrs. Perfect can live for 20 years on $350,000?? And these two did everything right -- they invested between 5 percent and 9 percent of their income every year, starting at age 25. They never stopped making contributions -- which nearly everyone does during job changes or tough times -- and they never made a withdrawal, which roughly one-third of investors do. Still, they were left with just $175,000 each at age 65.? Once and for all, that should expose the dirty little secret of 401(k) plans:
The math doesn't work.
Now, onto the math assumptions from above.? For Demos? model, Hiltonsmith created an imaginary couple who worked from 1966-2005. Each earned the median income for their gender during that time (a range from $50,000 to $70,000 total, annually) and socked away a slowly increasing amount of their income during that time, starting at 5 percent and ending at 9 percent. Half their money was invested in a stock fund, half in a bond fund. Average growth and average published stock and bond fund fees from 2010 were applied to their accounts, and average trading costs were also deducted. No employee match was considered in the calculation, given the wide variety of matching programs ? and the fact that many firms suspended matching contributions during the recession. Of course, the couple is a pure abstraction -- there were no 401(k) accounts in the 1960s.? But it takes this kind of modeling to create a hypothetical that covers an investor's entire work life, and their potential lifetime loss from fees.
As for my "one penny" calculation: Taking one penny every year from a dollar is not the same as taking 1 percent, but it's close.? Because the initial dollar amount drops with each deduction, each 1 percent annual hit is slightly less. To wit, 1 percent of 99 cents is less than 1 percent of 100 cents.? Do the math, and you'll find taking one percent of someone's money every year for 30 years is the equivalent of taking 26.03 percent. Still quite a lot of money for nothing.
What should you do with this information? Absent a better idea, put all your 401(k) money in an index fund, which will have fees that are 70 percent to 90 percent lower than standard mutual funds.? And watch your next quarterly statement for those depressing fee boxes. Most employers have two months to comply with the rules that take effect July 1, so you won?t start seeing the fee information until your first statement after Aug. 10.

Hey there sweet shoppers! This is Jacq with today?s blog post, and today I?m going to share with you our vacation adventure. It?s been four days since we got home from our three week vacation in Australia and I can say that everyone had a wonderful time. We spent one week in Sydney and the rest of our vacation days in Canberra to visit our relatives there. I can say it was a relaxing vacation, it was a little tricky having a fourteen month around sight seeing and all but we managed it well. My five year old was a trooper and she had a great time.
How amazing is the Sydney Opera House? We took a ferry from Circular Quay to go to Luna Park and had the most fantastic view of the harbor. Luna Park was small but nice, the rides mostly were catered for kids older than mine so we just explored the park for pictures and a ferris wheel ride. We got a bunch of good photos from there so I?m not complaining.
My daughter loved the koala bear so much she asked us to buy a koala bear bag from the gift shop. I must admit those cuddly bears are kinda cute. The little one was sleeping when we took this photo, we dare not disturb her slumber so it was just the three of us here. Anyway we went to the Opera House some days later and we got family photos then.
More pictures?
In the next few days we went around Sydney for tons of sightseeing, we packed our schedule to see as much as we can but not too much to make the kids tired and cranky at the end of the day. The sun sets early in Sydney, at 5:30pm it is already dark so we go back to our apartment by then so we can rest and start our day early the next day.
Some of the other places we went to were Wildlife Sydney and Sydney Aquarium at Darling Harbor. We got to see these fellows?
We also went to Taronga Zoo where my eldest had a blast seeing all the animals. Her favorite ones were the koala bears, elephants and giraffe. The view from the zoo was spectacular as well. It was too darn cold that day though since it was drizzling a little bit so when we were watching the bird show we were freezing almost but otherwise we all had a great time.
We also went for a walk at Hyde Park and heard mass at St. Mary?s Cathedral.
Other places we visited were Powerhouse Museum, National Maritime Museum and Sydney Tower.
I did a lot of research prior to the trip so it was easy for us to find our way. We made use of public transportation and took the train, monorail and ferry to go around but mostly we just walked (thank you google maps we never got lost). We also brought a travel stroller and a baby carrier with us so the girls wouldn?t be so tired from all the walking.
It was a great trip indeed! I can?t wait to plan for our next family trip Thanks for letting me share.

An Oak Ridge National Laboratory and University of Tennessee team has used the Department of Energy's Jaguar supercomputer to calculate the number of isotopes allowed by the laws of physics.
The team, led by Witek Nazarewicz, used a quantum approach known as density functional theory, applying it independently to six leading models of the nuclear interaction to determine that there are about 7,000 possible combinations of protons and neutrons allowed in bound nuclei with up to 120 protons (a hypothetical element called "unbinilium"). The team's results are presented in the June 28 issue of the journal Nature.
Most of these nuclei have not been observed experimentally.
"They are bound, meaning they do not spit out protons or neutrons," Nazarewicz explained. "But they are radioactivethey are short-lived, because there are other processes, such as beta decay, that can give rise to transmutations."
Of the total, about 3,000 have been seen in nature or produced in nuclear physics laboratories. The others are created in massive stars or in violent stellar explosions.
The computations allowed the team to identify the nuclear drip lines that mark the borders of nuclear existence. For each number of protons in a nucleus, there is a limit to how many neutrons are allowed. For example, a helium nucleus, which contains two protons, can hold no more than six neutrons. If another neutron is added to the nucleus, it will simply "drip" off. Likewise, there is a limit to the number of protons that can be added to a nucleus with a given number of neutrons. Placement of the drip lines for heavier elements is based on theoretical predictions extrapolated far from experimental data and is, therefore, uncertain.
The closer an isotope is to one of these drip lines the faster it decays into more stable forms. Particle accelerators have been unable to identify most of these exotic isotopes, especially those approaching the neutron drip line, because they are impossible to produce using current combinations of beams and targets. In fact, said Nazarewicz, all radioactive isotopes decay until they are transformed into one of 288 isotopes that form the so-called "valley of stability." These stable isotopes have half-lives longer than the expected lifetime of the solar system (about 4.6 billion years).
Earlier estimates of the nuclear landscape varied from as few as 5,000 to as many as 12,000 possible nuclei, Nazarewicz noted. He said his team's calculations were based on the microscopic forces that cause neutrons and protons to cluster into nuclei, adding that results from the six separate models were surprisingly consistent. By using several models, theorists were able for the first time to quantify uncertainties of predicted drip lines.
Because most of these nuclei are beyond our experimental reach, he explained, models must conform to known nuclei in a way that allows researchers to extrapolate results for exotic nuclei. Insight on the nature of most exotic nuclei must be extrapolated from models, he said.
"This is not a young field," Nazarewicz noted. "Over the years we've tried to improve the models of the nucleus to include more and more knowledge and insights. We are building a nuclear model based on the best theoretical input guided by the best experimental data."
The calculations themselves were massive, with each set of nuclei taking about two hours to calculate on the 244,256-processor Jaguar system. Nazarewicz noted that each of these runs needed to include about 250,000 possible nuclear configurations.
"Such calculation would not be possible two to three years ago," he said. "Jaguar has provided a unique opportunity for nuclear theory."
Nazarewicz noted that this work, supported by DOE's Office of Science -- which also supports the Jaguar supercomputer -- and by the Academy of Finland, has both existential value, helping us to get a better understanding of the evolution of the universe, and potential practical applications.
"We are not doing nuclear physics just to see whether you can get 7,000 species," he explained. "There are various nuclei that we can use to our advantage, eventually. Those we call 'designer nuclei.'"
Among these valuable nuclei are iron-45, a collection of 26 protons and 19 neutrons, which may help us understand superconductivity between protons; a pear-shaped radium-225, with 88 protons and 137 neutrons, which will help us understand why there is more matter than antimatter in the universe; and terbium-149, with 65 protons and 84 neutrons, which has shown an ability to attach to antibodies and irradiate cancer cells without affecting healthy cells.
"They have done experiments on mice and now humans in which they would look at the effectiveness of this treatment," he said. "This treatment is called an 'alpha knife.'
"Applications will certainly follow from the basic knowledge."

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -The day is coming when Germany will finally beat Italy at a major tournament, according to midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger. And that day will be Thursday.
Schweinsteiger and his teammates will face Italy in a Euro 2012 semifinal in Warsaw, well aware of their national team's record against the Azzurri.
Italy has never lost to Germany at a World Cup or European Championship in seven previous meetings, and has an overall head-to-head record of 14-7 in 30 matches against the Germans, with nine draws.
The past may speak for Italy, but Schweinsteiger made it clear that this young generation has no hang-ups about past records with leading international sides - especially since Germany trounced England and Argentina, 4-1 and 4-0 respectively, at the 2010 World Cup.
More recently, Germany defeated Brazil for the first in 18 years, winning 3-2 in a friendly in August, and then beat the Netherlands 3-0 in a friendly and 2-1 in the group stage of Euro 2012.
"For years we could not beat the big nations, but then we beat England, Argentina, the Netherlands and Brazil. Now, it's Italy's turn to fall," Schweinsteiger said Wednesday.
"We have no fear but we have great respect for Italy."
Schweinsteiger has a key role to play in central midfield, providing the transition from defense to attack.
However, he has been playing with a lingering ankle injury after tearing a ligament in February that hasn't healed properly.
"I am now 100 percent fit. I have two full training sessions behind me and I am looking forward to this classic match," Schweinsteiger said.
As for Thursday's match, he will be expecting Germany to seize the initiative from the start.
"We'll have to attack them early ... We are going to need a certain amount of aggression," Schweinsteiger said.
Germany goes into the game with two more days' rest than its opponent, having beaten Greece 4-2 on Friday. Italy's quarterfinal match against England on Sunday went to extra time and a penalty shootout.

Online marketing is increasingly replacing traditional media as the number one way to engage user attention. With consumers skipping more commercials, ignoring more print ads, and oversaturated with billboards, it takes extra creativity to reach the eyes and mind of a potential customer.
Many elements of online marketing have become common strategies employed by all sizes of businesses. Blogs, Facebook fan pages, and Twitter accounts are frequently used. However, as access to information increases rapidly, it takes more than text to stand out. Video marketing has become the way to put your business head and shoulders above your competition in the eyes of consumers.
Why is video marketing so important? Why should your small business invest its limited resources in this kind of medium? Those are great questions, and here are five reasons that video marketing is key to your success:
Video Translates to Every Platform.
As technology advances, more and more customers are accessing the web from different devices. IPhones, IPads, Andriod devices, laptops, and desktops are all used by people all over the world. The great thing about video is that for a single investment, you can reach users on every platform. Video translates very well, and that makes it a great use of marketing dollars.
Low Cost Compared to Other Media.
Video can be uploaded for free to places like YouTube and Facebook. The only cost is the actual video production (which is worth investing in!). This makes ROI on video one of the best available for any marketing measure. It costs less per consumer reached than any traditional form of advertising.
Easy Sharing = Free Credibility.
Peopleare much more likely to listen to friends and family than a company. Fortunately, this is where online video shines. When viewers like your video, they will comment on it, tell their friends, and possibly even share the video to their own page. This gives you completely free credibility in the eyes of consumers. Rather than having to convince people that you mean what you say, your potential customers convince each other for you!
Demographics.
With many forms of advertising, the demographics you reach are very specific. If you want to reach a broader audience, you end up spending quite a bit more money. With online video, that?s not the case. According to a nationwide survey conducted by Burst Media, 71.6% of web users watch online videos in a given week ? and that?s spread throughout the 18 ? 54 year old age range. Online video gives you an incredibly wide audience for a low price.
Conversions.
The point of any marketing campaign is to gain sales and new customers. The survey by Burst Media indicates that 18.2% of online viewers say they took action due to an online video ? either visiting the company?s site or making a sale. That?s a great conversion rate, especially compared to traditional media advertising! If you want your marketing dollars to make a difference, invest in online video.
To give a real-world example, let?s take a look at a small business that used online video to make a significant difference in their growth and sales success. Blend Tec sells a fairly undistinguished product ? blenders. In order to differentiate themselves, they set out to prove that their blenders had more power and worked better than others. They chose to use humorous video to get their point across ? and it worked. Their videos have millions of views, and sales are up by 500%.
Blend Tec?s videos don?t feature dazzling acting talent, nor are they particularly long. They simply take unusual items and put it through their blender. Online video doesn?t have to be complicated ? in fact, simple is often better. What can your company do with online video today to bring additional growth and success?

Well, it's hardly the release of a new summer blockbuster, but getting full length content from the New York Times in Flipboard is certainly going to excite news hounds that also appreciate fine UI design. A lot of content from magazines and newspapers is presented in abbreviated format in the slick app, but now Times subscribers will have unfettered access to the "paper of record's" reporting. Even non-subscribers will be able to read some of the publications articles for free, just as they can through the site. Now all you have to do is wait for the switch to be flipped on Thursday and hope that other outlets follow suit.
CAIRO (AP) ? Islamist Mohammed Morsi was declared the winner Sunday in Egypt's first free presidential election in history, closing the tumultuous first phase of a democratic transition and opening a new struggle with the still-dominant military rulers who recently stripped the presidency of most of its powers.
In Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the uprising that ousted autocratic President Hosni Mubarak, joyous Morsi supporters wept and kneeled on the ground in prayer as soon as they heard the outcome announced live television. They danced, set off fireworks and released doves in the air with Morsi's picture attached in celebrations not seen in the square since Mubarak was forced out on Feb. 11, 2011.
Many are looking now to see whether Morsi will try to take on the military and wrestle back the powers they took from his office just one week ago. Thousands vowed to remain in Tahrir to demand that the ruling generals reverse their decision.
"I pledge to be a president who serves his people and works for them," Morsi said on his official web page. "I will not betray God in defending your rights and the rights of this nation." He was scheduled to address the nation Sunday night in his first speech after being declared president.
The White House congratulated Morsi and urged him to advance national unity as he forms a new government. White House press secretary Jay Carney said Morsi's victory is a milestone in Egypt's transition to democracy after decades of authoritarian rule under Mubarak. The Obama administration had expressed no public preference in the presidential race.
Left on the sidelines of the political drama are the liberal and secular youth groups that drove the uprising against Mubarak, left to wonder whether Egypt has taken a step towards becoming an Islamist state. Some grudgingly supported Morsi in the face of Ahmed Shafiq, who was Mubarak's last prime minister, while others boycotted the vote.
Morsi will now have to reassure them that he represents the whole country, not just Islamists, and will face enormous challenges after security and the economy badly deteriorated in the transition period.
Pro-democracy leader Mohammed ElBaradei urged unity after the results were announced.
"It is time we work all as Egyptians as part of a national consensus to build Egypt that is based on freedom and social justice," he wrote on his Twitter account.
The elections left the nation deeply polarized with one side backing Shafiq, who promised to provide stability and prevent Egypt from becoming a theocracy. Because of his military career, many saw him as the military's preferred candidate.
In the other camp are those eager for democratic change and backers of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood who were persecuted, jailed and banned under Mubarak but now find themselves one of the two most powerful groups in Egypt.
The other power center is the ruling military council that took power after the uprising and is headed by Mubarak's defense minister of 20 years.
Just one week ago, at the moment polls were closing in the presidential runoff, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) issued constitutional amendments that stripped the president's office of most of its major powers. The ruling generals made themselves the final arbiters over the most pressing issues still complicating the transition? such as writing the constitution, legislating, passing the state budget? and granted military police broad powers to detain civilians.
"I am happy the Brotherhood won because now the revolution will continue on the street against both of them, the Brotherhood and the SCAF," said Lobna Darwish, an activist who has boycotted the elections.
Also, a few days before that constitutional declaration, a court dissolved the freely elected parliament, which is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, leaving the military now in charge of legislating.
Brotherhood members and experts said the results were used a bargaining chip between the generals and the Brotherhood over the parameters of what appears to be a new power-sharing agreement. The country's new constitution is not written and the authorities of the president are not clear.
This is the first time modern Egypt will be headed by an Islamist and by a freely elected civilian. The country's last four presidents over the past six decades have all came from the ranks of the military.
"Congratulations because this means the end of the Mubarak state," said Shady el-Ghazali Harb, a prominent activist who was among the leaders of the protests in January and February last year.
The results of the elections were delayed for four days amid accusations of manipulation and foul play by both sides, raising political tensions in Egypt to a fever pitch.
The delay plunged the country into nerve-wrecking anticipation and pushed tensions to a fever pitch. Parallel mass rallies by Shafiq and Morsi supporters were held in different parts of Cairo and cut-throat media attacks by supporters of both swarmed TV shows. In the hours before the announcement of the winner, the fear of new violence was palpable.
Heavy security was deployed around the country, especially outside state institutions, in anticipation of possible violence. Workers were sent home early from jobs, jewelry stores closed for fear of looting and many were stocking up on food and forming long lines at cash machines in case new troubles began.
Morsi, the 60-year old U.S.-trained engineer, narrowly defeated Shafiq with 51.7 percent of the vote versus 48.3, by a margin of only 800,000 votes, the election commission said. Turnout was 51 percent.
Farouk Sultan, the head of the commission, described the elections as "an important phase in the end of building our nascent democratic experience."
Sultan went to pains to explain the more than 400 complaints presented by the two candidates challenging counting procedures and alleging attempts of rigging. It appeared to be an attempt to discredit claims that the election commission was biased in favor of Shafiq, the candidate perceived as backed by the military rulers.
The country is deeply divided between supporters of the Brotherhood, liberals and leftists who also decided to back them as a way to stand up to the military, and other secular forces that fear the domination of the Brotherhood, and grew critical of it in the past year. The small margin of victory for Morsi also sets him for a strong opposition from supporters of Shafiq, viewed as a representative of the old regime.
Naguib Sawiris, a Coptic Christian business tycoon who joined a liberal bloc in voicing opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood a day before the results were announced, said he expects the new president to send a reassuring message to Egypt's Christian minority who represent around 10 percent of the population of 85 million.
"There are fears of imposing an Islamic state ... where Christians don't have same rights," Sawiris told the private TV station CBC. Morsi "is required to prove the opposite. ... We don't want speeches or promises but in the coming period, it is about taking action. ... He was not our choice but we are accepting it is a democratic choice."
Hamdeen Sabahi, a leftist presidential candidate who came in a surprising third place in the first round of elections, asked Morsi to live up to his pledges to form a national coalition government and appoint presidential aides from different groups "that express the largest national consensus."
Khaled Abdel-Hamid, a leading leftist politician, said Morsi must fight to get his powers back or he will lose any popular support he may have garnered.
"If he fights to get his power back, we will support him. But if he doesn't fight back, then he is settling for siding with the military," he said.
BAGHDAD (AFP) -- Iraqi Kurdistan's efforts to ramp up its oil production and export capabilities increase the viability of independence as an option for the region, which is in a months-long standoff with Baghdad.
The dispute has seen Kurdistan president Massud Barzani launch a series of attacks against Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, while the region cut off oil exports to Iraq in a payment dispute and also refused to hand over a fugitive Iraqi vice president who is wanted for allegedly running a death squad.
The autonomous region in northern Iraq has not made any overt moves towards independence, although Barzani has said he could resort to a referendum on its future if the crisis with Baghdad drags on.
Kurdistan has its own government, security forces, borders and flag, but it is economically dependent on the Iraqi government, which is required to pay 17 percent of the national budget to Kurdistan.
The region has signed dozens of contracts with foreign oil firms aimed at boosting its oil sector in recent years, and said it intends to build pipelines that would give it an independent export capability -- moves that could give it financial independence.
The Iraqi government, which says all oil contracts must go through Baghdad and regards any that do not as illegal, has strenuously opposed such deals.
"It is becoming increasingly clear that the Kurds see expansion of (Kurdistan's) oil sector as the key to future independence," said Reidar Visser, an Iraq analyst and editor of the www.historiae.org website.
"By signing those deals, the Kurds are looking at the long term, when it would be in their favour to split from Iraq proper by being financially independent," said Ruba Husari, the editor of www.iraqoilforum.com.
Iraqi Kurdistan does not currently have the ability to independently export oil, but the region has said that two pipelines, one for oil and another for gas, are planned.
A statement posted on the Kurdistan government website in May said that natural resources minister Ashti Hawrami had spoken about "plans for a new gas pipeline to supply Turkey?s BOTAS gas grid... and in the next 12 months, a million-barrel oil pipeline to connect to the Ceyhan pipeline" that feeds an export terminal on Turkey's Mediterranean coast.
"A pipeline from Kurdistan to Turkey would allow the Kurds to export crude independently of Baghdad and cash the proceeds directly," Husari said.
"The Kurds are acting independently in everything but the name," said Visser.
But he noted that the position of Turkey, with which Kurdistan has important economic ties, is key, saying: "It is conceivable that Turkey may prefer to maintain the nominal unity of Iraq."
Baghdad has pushed back against Kurdistan's oil deals, especially an exploration contract the region signed with US oil giant ExxonMobil last October.
"Maliki views these deals as representing a very dangerous initiative that may lead to the outbreak of wars" and "breaking up the unity of Iraq," the premier's spokesman Ali Mussawi said.
The premier "sent a message to American President Barack Obama ... urging him to intervene to prevent ExxonMobil from going in this direction," Mussawi said.
And Iraq's deputy premier for energy affairs issued a warning to French companies that any contracts with Baghdad would be scrapped if they signed deals with local or regional governments in Iraq.
Baghdad "has been blacklisting companies from doing projects in Iraq proper," if they sign deals with Kurdistan, Husari said.
"There is little it can do with past contracts, but all future contracts will have a clause saying that federal government approval is required for any project in the oil sector," she said.
But production-sharing contracts that are offered by Kurdistan are a major draw for companies, as they are more lucrative than the service contracts the federal government has awarded, which offer a fixed fee per barrel of oil.
The region's prime minister, Nechirvan Barzani, told AFP in Arbil that Kurdistan is committed to the Iraqi constitution, but also said that the Kurdish people have a right to self-determination.
"It's a question about people. Of course, as a nation, yes, we have that right, but now we are dealing with reality," Barzani said.
Hi, internet. Sorry I?ve been absent lately. I?m taking a summer class (for the first time in four years!) and, in addition to my regular job, it?s a lot of work. I?ll try to get posting again on a somewhat regular basis!
Currently listening: Have Heart -?Songs to Scream at the Sun Currently reading:?Women and Politics
There?s something that has been bothering me lately. Around the time that Tumblr announced they would be actively screening and banning accounts & posts which promoted self-harm and eating disorders, I noticed a new trend.
Fitness Inspiration. Or, ?fitspo? for short. A little background: the type of stuff Tumblr was taking aim at (although how effectively they?ve implemented this policy is arguable) was content that actively promotes or encourages eating disordered behavior. Images of emaciated people, usually women, emphasizing characteristics of being extremely underweight that are circulated by ?support? communities for eating disorders, but all they support is the continuation and reinforcement of life-threatening disorders.
The average person sees this crap and they are appropriately upset by it. However, it was quickly replaced by ?fitspo?. This, it seems, is perfectly okay with the average person. Images of female athletes doing physically demanding activities, extreme yoga poses, or close-ups of some stomach muscles accompanied by some ?motivational? captions.
On the surface, it may seem harmless enough, encouraging people to exercise and to eat well. Exercise is good, right? Food is good, right? As a runner, I can?t disagree with either of those sentiments. I enjoy exercising, I sleep better when I?m active, and I make sure to eat in a way that supports all the activity I do because I want to make sure I?m giving my body what it needs.
There are two things I don?t really ever look at, though: the mirror and the scale. Here?s why.
Sometimes weight loss can be a legitimate part of improving one?s health (I dislike the phrase ?getting healthy? because it unavoidably implies that one is lacking in health). But, I vehemently reject the notion that weight loss is an intrinsic part of improving health. I?m far more interested in knowing how fast I can run a mile in or how far I can run, so the time on the stopwatch is way more relevant than the number on the scale.
And then we have the mirror, which is where the problem with this ?fitness inspiration? stuff really comes into play. I?m less concerned about how my body looks than what it?s capable of doing. Unfortunately, that puts me in the minority, and this health/fitness trend has created a whole new brand of body shaming & dissatisfaction. Those ?motivational? phrases I mentioned? There?s one that seems to get a lot of circulation that says, ?Skinny girls look good in clothes. Fit girls look good naked.?
Sorry, but screw that. This is nothing but weightism under the guise of what has been deemed a socially acceptable means of critiquing bodies. I wrote about this before, but when I ran the half marathon in ?November 2011, there were some people who were much more experienced runners who were also much larger individuals than me. I doubt that anyone would think to put their picture on some ?fitspo? because they don?t look like a seasoned Nike triathlete, but they were in excellent health, and they finished their 13.2 mile run at least thirty minutes before I did. And when they crossed that finish line, I bet you they felt pretty damned good about themselves (just like I did!).
There is so much more to our HEALTH than what we see in the mirror and what that the scale says. You cannot assess your health by looking at either. That doesn?t stop people from trying, though. A friend recently linked me to an online company that asks you to send in a photo of yourself in your underpants and their ?experts? will provide you with a fitness assessment and exercise plan. Aside from the fact that this service, which is pretty much exclusively marketed to women, is a little on the creepy side for asking for those kinds of pictures, it reinforces the notion that your health can even be assessed by just a few pictures.
That?s just it, though. This was never about health ? it?s all about body image, and assumption that you are (or should be) dissatisfied with the way you look. The only way to have any kind of standard, though, is to compare your body to other bodies, because if we all looked identical, it wouldn?t be an issue, right? Comparing yourself to others, though, is a surefire way to never, ever be satisfied with what you have or how you look.
Lexie Kite, co-founder of a group called Beauty Redefined, did a really great write-up on why this stuff is so problematic. From her article:
If these images and texts motivate you to respect your body as something that can do so much good, make and reach fitness goals, and maintain health that will keep you happy and able, then they are appropriate for you. If they motivate you to worry about being looked at or to improve parts of your body to meet a beauty ideal you see in media, you must be aware of this. Virginia at?VirginaSoleSmith.com?so concisely says, ?Pay attention to how it makes you feel to be ?inspired? by lots of photos of a largely unattainable beauty ideal. Because that?s what rock hard abs are, after all. Yes, sure, core strength is important for your health. But pictures of bikini-clad, chiseled muscles beaded with sweat? That?s about pretty, not about health.
You can read the full article here.
I think it?s important to call out body shaming and weightism whenever we see it. ?Fitspo? provides a socially acceptable means of both increasing dissatisfaction with our own bodies as well as for critiquing others, and it?s these less obvious ones that I think do the most damage.

**Great Laptop For The Price $320** >>Special Buy I just bought this laptop yesterday from my local Wal-Mart store for myself. I own another Toshiba laptop that I purchased 2 years ago which now I'm giving to my children. These computers are great, haven't had any problems since I've had them. You can't beat paying a great price for a top of the line name band in electronics! 03/07/2012
Great buy! Just bought this yesterday at my local store for $328. Great speed. Lots of fun apps on it and there is an app store for Toshiba. There is also a book site that you can download books from and read them on your laptop. Easy setup good speed. I hemmed and hawed about 3gigs instead of 4 gigs, but I really don't save work info on my computer I just game and play on social internet sites. I would highly recommend this laptop. 03/17/2012
My 1st Toshiba I picked this out, because the local Wal*Mart did not have a large amount of laptops in stock in my price range. So I get this home. I like the laptop so far. I like the number pad, extra. It seems to have more then enough ram. Not to concerned about the hard drive as I have an external hard drive. The processor is fast enough for what I need. The only real problem is the speakers just don't seem to be loud enough, will be using either ear phones or a pair of external speakers.I would recommend this to my friends, wal*mart needs to carry more.... 03/18/2012
