Presenting is tough. ?It requires steady nerves, a lot of?preparation, and good non-verbal communication. ?If the presenter?s native tongue is not English, the challenge is even greater. ?If this scenario fits you, consider these few tips:
1) Take your time when presenting, and always take a break after each thought group. ?Breaking after each thought will allow your audience time to register what you are saying, and it will allow you more time to think about how to articulate the next phrase.
2) If your English is very weak, write out the speech, and practice it with a coach, or a friend who speaks English well. ?This is not ideal, it?s usually best to speak from bullet points and keep things loose, but if you are having a very hard time being understood, it?s important to really think about your phraseology before the speech.
3) ?Use simple words! ?I?ll say it again. ?Use simple words! ?This is good public speaking craft whether or not your native tongue is English.
4) ?Finally, keep in mind that many executives in New York City are not native speakers, and are in the same boat as you. ?There?s no reason to freak out because your English is a little rough. ?Just take your time, use simple words, write out the speech if necessary, and you?ll be on your way to speaking success!
