Mobile is Becoming a Larger Slice of the Marketing Pie

Any successful marketing strategy must work with the latest technological trends, while still maintaining a great return on investment. This is particularly true for the real estate business, which has suffered greatly during the recession and beyond. But now that the housing market is showing signs of improving, it is more important than ever to quickly initiate a campaign that takes advantage of any potential upswing in the market and get ahead of the competition. The real estate tools to help you do that are closer than you might think.

According to a mobile marketing survey done by StrongMail, lack of strategy inhibits 37% ?of businesses considering a mobile marketing campaign. The report also indicates that 22% of businesses have few existing resources to add a mobile campaign to their business marketing plan. Despite these road bumps, StrongMail?s survey shows that mobile marketing initiatives and budgets are expected to increase overall (70% expect their budget to increase in the next 12 months). The real estate toolbox is projected to increase in size in the next year; however, many businesses don?t know what to fill it with.

iPhone apps, blackberry app, mobile app, IOS app, real estate appThese stats point to an opportunity. Integrate a cost effective, easy to market tool that can accommodate every facet of your real estate brokerage. For example, a device agnostic, cascading mobile solutions provide a way for agents under any brokerage to participate in the powerful returns of a high-level marketing initiative, and maybe even defray some of their own marketing spend. Having a real estate tool that works on multiple devices from iPhones to tablets to standard feature phones, you have a significantly wider reach, gaining headway with a larger audience to close more sales. Click here to learn more about a few of these solutions to enhance your own marketing strategy and get the most from your marketing spend.

The StrongMail survey results also highlight a real opportunity for businesses to integrate a mobile real estate tools with a variety of digital channels to properly engage customers at various stages of the customer lifecycle. For example, many realtors connect with potential customers through the referrals of old customers. By becoming mobile savvy, you are showing your customers that you are willing to connect using the mediums they are most comfortable with. This is especially true with the current wave of new homeowners considering the average home buyer is 33 years old and the average smart phone owner is between 25 and 34. By increasing your marketing budget to include more mobile real estate tools, you are quickly building the potential for a network of customers that are within hands reach of increasing your leads.

Tomato genome gets fully sequenced -- paves way to healthier fruits, veggies

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? For the first time, the genome of the tomato, Solanum lycopersicum, has been decoded, and it becomes an important step toward improving yield, nutrition, disease resistance, taste and color of the tomato and other crops. The full genome sequence, as well as the sequence of a wild relative, is jointly published in the latest issue of the journal Nature.

Specifically, the genome was sequenced from the "Heinz 1706" tomato.

The publication caps years of work by members of the Tomato Genomics Consortium, an international collaboration between Argentina, Belgium, China, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, United Kingdom, United States and others.

James Giovannoni, a scientist at the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research, located on the campus of Cornell University, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, lead the U.S. tomato sequencing team, which includes researchers at several institutions. The wild tomato (Solanum pimpinellifolium) genome sequence was developed at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Consortium researchers report that tomatoes possess some 35,000 genes arranged on 12 chromosomes. "For any characteristic of the tomato, whether it's taste, natural pest resistance or nutritional content, we've captured virtually all those genes," says Giovannoni.

The sequences of these genes and their arrangement on the chromosomes are described in the Nature article, "The tomato genome sequence provides insights into fleshy fruit evolution," which is information that allows researchers to move at a quicker pace and plant breeders to produce new varieties with specific desired characteristics.

"Tomato genetics underlies the potential for improved taste every home gardener knows and every supermarket shopper desires and the genome sequence will help solve this and many other issues in tomato production and quality," says Giovannoni.

Now that the genome sequence of one variety of tomato is known, it will also be easier and much less expensive for seed companies and plant breeders to sequence other varieties for research and development, he added. Whereas the first tomato genome sequence came at a cost of millions of dollars, subsequent ones might only cost $10,000 or less, by building on these initial findings.

To provide access to the gene sequences of the tomato and related species, Boyce Thompson Institute scientist Lukas Mueller and his team have created an interactive website (www.solgenomics.net). In the United States, Boyce Thompson Institute scientists Zhangjun Fei and Joyce Van Eck contributed to the sequence and its analysis. Other U.S. institutions involved: Cornell University, Colorado State, University of Florida, University of Oklahoma, University of Georgia, University of Arizona, University of Delaware, Montana State, University of Tennessee, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the USDA.

The sequencing of the tomato genome has implications for other plant species. Strawberries, apples, melons, bananas and many other fleshy fruits, share some characteristics with tomatoes, so information about the genes and pathways involved in fruit ripening can potentially be applied to them, helping to improve food quality, food security and reduce costs.

"Now we can start asking a lot more interesting questions about fruit biology, disease resistance, root development and nutritional qualities," Giovannoni says. Tomatoes represent a $2 billion market in the United States alone. The USDA estimates that Americans consume, on average, more than 72 pounds of tomato products annually.

The sequencing would not have been possible without the work of Cornell's Steven Tanksley and Boyce Thompson's Greg Martin in the 1990s. Tanksley, Martin and other Ithaca scientists developed genetic maps and other molecular tools for tomatoes to study mechanisms of disease resistance, and those tools ultimately paved the way for the consortium's sequencing efforts.

JOBS ACT Helps Solar Investing Goes Mainstream ~ what IS working

JOBS ACT Helps Solar Investing Goes Mainstream

Posted by Linda H on 6:38 AM

'; div.innerHTML = summary; } //]]> Thousands of Americans log in to online trading accounts every day to manage personal stock portfolios. Now, there?s a new option for individual investors. I recently took advantage of this option by creating an account with?Solar Mosaic?and investing a small amount of money, along with about 85 other individuals, in a 26-kilowatt rooftop solar system in Oakland.

Right now my $25 investment is really an interest-free loan, since historically companies like Solar Mosaic haven?t been able to offer financial returns on
their products. However, thanks to passage of?the JOBS Act?last month, Solar Mosaic and similar companies will be able to offer returns on investments for ?crowdfunded? projects. So in addition to buying pure stock in a publicly traded company, I?ll soon be able to use websites like Solar Mosaic?s to build a portfolio of solar investments that provide a return on investment with every kilowatt-hour of solar energy produced.

Much has been written about the JOBS Act and its impending effect on?crowdfunding,?entrepreneurs seeking capital, and emerging growth companies like?Kickstarter. But for me, crowdfunding?s new legal status and ability to raise capital for renewable energy projects is indicative of a broader theme: retail investors?that?s you and me, as opposed to institutional investors like banks and funds?now have access to, by my count,?five?primary, different ways to make real money by personally investing in solar.

Let?s look at these five kinds of solar-focused investments that we can currently make as retail investors (if I?ve left any big categories off, please start a discussion in the comment section below!):

1. Crowdfunded Solar

  • As outlined above, companies like Solar Mosaic will soon be able to offer modest returns on stable, low-risk investments in solar PV systems across the U.S. This is as simple as selecting a project, investing $25, and having cash payments flow into your account with interest over time.
  • Crowdfunding isn?t just restricted to solar. In the UK, several companies are encouraging crowdfunded investment incommunity wind projects.

2. Direct Ownership
  • In some states and local jurisdictions, a combination of plummeting solar photovoltaic costs, local and federal incentives, and escalating utility electricity rates have made flat-out ownership of a solar system a good investment with returns as high as 5 percent, depending on location.

3. Third-Party Finance
  • In many places in the U.S., power purchase agreements and solar lease providers like SolarCity, SunRun, and Sungevity can offer zero- down solar leases that save you 15 percent from your old electricity bill from day one.?
  • While more of an immediate payback contract than an ?investment,? the lease option opens up your bank account to put saved money to work elsewhere. Since retail electricity rates historically increase every year, financial returns can expand over the term of the lease.

4. Community Solar Gardens
  • Hailing from RMI?s backyard in Colorado,?Clean Energy Collective?offers customers a way to invest in renewable generation to for up to 100 percent of their electricity use. This investment in solar energy and other renewables can provide a return on investment and is open to individuals without rooftop space of their own.

5. Direct Stock Purchase
  • Perhaps the most obvious way for individuals to invest in solar, anyone can buy stock in publicly traded upstream solar companies like the NASDAQ-listed SunPower (SPWR), First Solar (FSLR), and Enphase (ENPH).
  • Where one invests in the solar value chain can make a big difference on the success of the investment. Stock purchases of downstream participants (like installers and developers) whose value is aligned with the project-focused investing listed in the four cases above, may soon be an option as companies like?SolarCity go public. One can already invest in developer SunEdison through its parent company MEMC (NYSE: WFR) as well as utilities and other larger companies that develop solar. But in these cases the investment will rest on all of the activities of the company, including those not solar-related.
  • Additionally, several mutual funds and business development companies channel capital to solar projects and companies, but I?m not currently aware of any with a singular solar focus?although this could change in the future.

(AP) ? Jerry Sandusky attended a closed-door meeting with the judge in his child sexual abuse case Tuesday and four of his accusers made formal requests for anonymity, a day before what could be the final hearing before the start of trial.

The topic of the previously unannounced meeting ? which also included Sandusky's lawyer and prosecutors ? wasn't clear, and participants declined to comment afterward.

Judge John Cleland has not ruled on a pending defense request to have charges dismissed. Jury selection from a pool of State College-area residents is expected to begin June 5.

Sandusky, 68, a retired assistant football coach at Penn State, faces 52 criminal counts. Prosecutors say he sexually abused 10 boys over 15 years, allegations he has repeatedly denied.

His lawyer, Joe Amendola, has said Sandusky did not intend to be at the pretrial hearing Wednesday afternoon.

Also Tuesday, four of the accusers filed court motions asking Cleland to prevent their names from being made public.

Lawyers for so-called Victims 3, 5 and 7 made a broad request to prevent all the accusers' identities from being disclosed publicly, saying disclosure would cause their clients additional fear, anxiety and mental anguish and potentially expose them to physical harm.

Attorneys Andrew Shubin and Justine Andronici, who represent Victims 3 and 7, wrote in their motion that while their clients' testimony is "of critical importance and the legitimate subject of media and public interest, personal information identifying Sandusky's alleged sexual abuse victims is not." Lawyers for Victim 5 joined their motion.

Lawyers for Victim 4 asked that a pseudonym be used for him during the upcoming trial.

"It is an unfortunate reality that some victims in high profile cases view the disclosure of their identity as the equivalent of being branded with a scarlet letter," wrote Ben Andreozzi and Jeff Fritz, lawyers for Victim 4, adding that accusers would rather be remembered for their positive contributions to society.

"Although Victim 4 remains 100 percent committed to testifying against the defendant in this case, at what expense will it come to his short-term and long-term well-being?" they wrote.

Shubin and Andronici wrote that Sandusky's lawyer wasn't opposed to their motion, but they had not heard back from state prosecutors. Messages left after business hours on Tuesday for a spokesman for the attorney general's office, and for Sandusky's lawyers, were not immediately returned.

This NOAA satellite image taken Monday, May 28, 2012 at 01:45 PM EDT shows clouds over Florida and Georgia associated with Tropical Depression Beryl as it continues to produce rain and thunderstorms over the region. Several inches of rain are possible by the time the storm exits the region and moves to the northeast. Clouds in the Plains are associated with a front that may instigate showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Some of these thunderstorms may be severe. (AP Photo/Weather Underground)

(AP) ? Joyce Connolly and her daughters left their home in Hurricane, W.Va., to head south for a Memorial Day beach vacation ? and ended up in the center of Tropical Storm Beryl.

While it left little damage after sweeping ashore with 70 mph winds around midnight Monday at Jacksonville, Fla., the storm still wrecked much of Connolly's trip. She skipped a graduation because powerful winds kept her and her daughters from venturing past the beach boardwalk when the storm approached Sunday. And she postponed their drive home Monday as Beryl, downgraded to a tropical depression, continued to dump rain near the Georgia-Florida state line.

"It definitely changed our vacation to unfortunate circumstances that we're not happy with. But you just have to live with it," said Connolly, who at least found the irony of her hometown's name "pretty funny."

Beach trips, backyard barbecues and graveside Memorial Day observances got a good soaking in southeastern Georgia and northern Florida.

Beach lifeguards turned swimmers away from the ocean because of dangerous rip currents from Jacksonville to Tybee Island, Georgia's largest public beach 140 miles to the north. Skip Sasser, who oversees the island's lifeguards as its fire chief, said beach traffic was unusually thin for a holiday. The ocean was declared off-limits to swimmers for a second day in a row.

"It's been raining intermittently, so it's chased a lot of them off," Sasser said. "There was a lot of traffic this morning heading westbound out of Tybee."

Veterans groups, meanwhile, carried out outdoor Memorial Day ceremonies despite the grim forecast.

At Savannah's historic Bonaventure Cemetery, American Legion members worked through a downpour to make sure its plot for veterans had a small American flag planted by each headstone.

"When we were setting up, I had a different shirt on and I got soaked to the skin. My socks and my underwear probably are, too," said Jim Grismer, commander of American Legion Post 135 in Savannah. "I had so many people trying to talk me into moving it inside. But I said then you can't have the live firing salute and the flag raising."

The rain paused just as a crowd of about 100 people began arriving. Robert Schulz, an 80-year-old who served in the Marines in the Korean War, held a folded umbrella in one hand as he saluted with the other during the service. Schulz said he and his wife briefly considered skipping the ceremony for the first time in 10 years.

"I said it would be terrible if nobody showed up," Barbara Schulz said. "We had to come for our veterans."

Aside from ruining holiday plans, the rain was welcome on the Georgia coast for bringing some relief from persistent drought. According to the state climatologist's office, as of May 1, rainfall in Savannah was 15 inches below normal for the past 12 months.

Emergency officials said minor flooding was reported near the coast, but the ground was quickly soaking up the water. And the winds had died down considerably.

"We've needed it for a long time," said Ray Parker, emergency management director for coastal McIntosh County south of Savannah, who said the worst damage came by trees falling on two homes overnight. "We were lucky that we didn't get 3 to 4 inches in 30 minutes. Most of it soaked right in before it had a chance to run off. It fell on an empty sponge."

The rainfall stopped in Savannah and other northern parts of the Georgia coast Monday afternoon, but more was expected through Tuesday. A frontal system moving south from the Great Lakes is expected to cause the storm do a U-turn and push it back out to sea.

Despite gray skies and puddles among the cobblestones on Savannah's downtown riverfront, Ruth Laino and Pat Walton waited on a park bench to board a ferry boat for an hour-long river cruise. They said only one rain burst interrupted their trip so far but they were on a covered tour trolley.

"We have our rain ponchos in our bags, so we're prepared," said Walton. "It could have been really nice and really hot. The breeze makes it more comfortable."

Georgia Power reported about 2,900 coastal customers without power Monday morning, but that number dropped to 1,300 by afternoon. Jacksonville city officials say 20,000 were without power and bus service was canceled because of so many flooded roads, downed power lines and trees.

Streets in Jacksonville Beach were unusually vacant. Bands of blinding rain alternated with dry conditions.

Taylor Anderson, captain of Jacksonville Beaches' American Red Cross Volunteer Lifesaving Corps, said he was coordinating safety procedures with local government officials. The beach was closed, but before it was on Sunday, lifeguards over and over again had to warn people to get out of the water, he said.

"Now that the storm's finally onshore and people can see that it's so dangerous and the winds and the current are up, people are lot more hesitant to go in, more so than yesterday," Anderson said.

In northeast Florida, several Memorial Day events were canceled, including one honoring veterans at the St. Augustine National Cemetery and a parade in Palatka.

"I don't mean to sound mushy, but today is Memorial Day and I hate that it ruined some plans," said Glynn County, Ga., emergency management director Jay Wiggins. "But that's just the nature of the weather."

Beryl was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain to parts, with some areas getting as much as a foot. Forecasters said the storm surge and high tide could bring 2 to 4 feet of flooding in northeastern Florida and Georgia, and 1 to 2 feet in southern South Carolina.

As they left the Savannah cemetery, 76-year-old Army veteran Byron Stephens and his wife, Marilyn, said they were determined to attend the Memorial Day ceremony regardless of the weather.

"It didn't stop people from fighting in inclement weather," Marilyn Stephens said. "This is what Memorial Day is all about."

Milk markets as ?the great equalizer? in East Africa?

Making agriculture profitable for poor farmers builds self-sufficiency

Remarkably, more than 80 per cent of the milk produced and sold in Kenya comes from small-scale players, typically farmers raising one or two dairy cows on small plots of land and milk hawkers plying their trade on bicycles on streets and in villages. (...)

My Stay at Disney?s Animal Kingdom Lodge

My recent trip to Disney World was spent at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. ?I had never stayed there before so I was really excited to to give it a try. ?This resort has been expanded in recent years so it now has two sections: Jambo House and Kidani Village. ?I stayed in Jambo House so that?s what I?ll be discussing this week. ?If I ever get the chance to stay at Kidani I?ll be sure to write a separate review for it. ?How did it stack up against some of my favorite Disney resorts? ?Read on to find out!

Guests can see the thatched roof of this resort from the road as they make their way to this beautiful resort. ?The building is meant to represent the lodges found in national parks in Africa with heavy influence from tribal architecture and design. ?The lobby here is worth a visit no matter where you are staying. ?I had been to this resort many times before without sleeping there and always marveled at the beauty of this space. ?The three storied space has a huge glass wall at the rear allowing guests to get a view of the gorgeous savanna and hopefully some of its inhabitants. ?In addition to the savanna there are rich woods, the inside of the thatched roof, amazing chandeliers made from tribal shields, and a fireplace with plenty of seating around it. ?If it is too warm to sit by the fire, there are plenty of other seating areas throughout the lobby including one just for kids. ?I could wander around the lobby for a while just taking in all of the sights and artifacts imported from Africa which are displayed throughout this vast area.

Although I love the design of both the interior and exterior spaces here, the main draw is obviously the animals. ??There are over 43 acres of land designated as savanna space where over 30 species of animals roam around for guests to enjoy. ?You can get a glimpse of the animals from many common areas throughout the resort, but the main viewing area off of the lobby is the largest and it also will have safari guides to answer any questions you may have about the animals. ?About half of the rooms also have a view of one of the three savannas as well. ?It is pretty awesome to sit out on your balcony and watch a zebra wander by.

My friends and I were lucky enough to book one of these savanna view rooms for our stay. ?We stayed in one of the DVC studio villas, so I haven?t had the chance to experience a standard room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge yet. ?Not only did we have a view of a savanna, but we also could see Expedition Everest from our balcony! ?Not too shabby. ?The number of animals on our savanna was not always what I had hoped for, so I think I?ll request a room on the main savanna next time. ?Otherwise the room couldn?t have been better! ?The dark woods and tribal patterned bedding make for a cozy and warm environment. ?Since it was a DVC studio it came furnished with a queen sized bed and a pull out sofa as well as a table with chairs, a chest of drawers, and a flat screen TV. ?It wasn?t huge, but three adults did just fine inside it.

It should be noted there are some special rules at this resort for rooms overlooking the savanna. ?The cast member who checks you in will go over them with you, but the basic idea is to not do anything to hurt the animals from your balcony. ?Please, please don?t feed them. ?The giraffe does not want your left over popcorn from Main Street. ?The cast member will also let you know balloons are not allowed at the resort at all because of the risk they pose to the animals. ?It is best to know that little tidbit before buying your kids balloons in one of the parks.

We tended to linger a bit more in our room than we usually do so we could enjoy the view from our balcony. ?If sitting on your balcony isn?t your thing (although it should be at this resort), there are tons of other things to do at this resort as well. ?I could fill an entire blog post with activities for kids of all ages to take advantage of at this resort. ?For example there are animal programs throughout the day, games by the pool, a gym, a spa, culinary programs, a museum exhibit, restaurants, and a wonderful pool facility. ?You could spend your whole vacation at this resort, actually take some time to relax for a change, and be completely satisfied with your Disney experience.

Speaking of the pool, this area is huge and includes a slide, plenty of seating areas, hot tubs, a playground, and a view of flamingos and whatever other animals might wander by. ?The landscaping surrounding this watering hole is lush and just as beautiful as the rest of the hotel. ?It was a treat to find animal habitats close by. ?Of course, there is also a pool bar available for anyone who might want to have a cocktail while they relax by the water.

There are three restaurants here to suit the needs of any guest. ?Boma: Flavors of Africa is a buffet which serves breakfast and dinner. ?For a fine dining experience check out Jiko: The Cooking Place which is always a hit among Disney World regulars. ?For quick service The Mara offers your standard theme park fare for less adventurous eaters, but also features African influenced dishes which are quite tasty. ? Why not visit The Animal Kingdom Lodge one day even if you aren?t staying there to take in the beauty of the building, the animals, and have a meal? ?Even if you just do this at the quick service facility, you?ll have a wonderful time. ?If you finished your evening at the resort?s lounge called Victoria Falls you?d really be in for a treat. ?I ate at all three of these restaurants during my stay so I?ll be sure to write more about my dining experiences in later blog posts.

I?d be be overlooking one of my favorite stores on Disney World property if I didn?t mention the Zawadi Marketplace. ?This shop can be found off of the main lobby and boasts some of the most unique items anywhere at Disney World. ?I rarely buy anything since a wood giraffe wouldn?t really go with the decor of my house, but I love to look around and admire the artistry of many of there items. ?Wood carvings are just the tip of the iceberg at this shop although it also offers typical gift shop souvenirs as well.

Transportation to the Animal Kingdom Lodge is all via bus. ?The bus system is shared with Kidani Village so be prepared to make more than one stop. ?I used the bus to get to the Magic Kingdom during my stay since it is often quicker to take the bus than your own car to that park. ?I didn?t wait long and things seemed to run smoothly so I was pleased. ?We did opt to rent a car though which I recommend no matter where you stay, but at this resort in particular. ?It is a bit far from everything except the Animal Kingdom Park so it will usually be faster to get around with your own car.

I absolutely loved my stay at this resort! ?The decor, the animals, and the amenities all make it worth returning for me and I hope to do so soon. ?Since I have not stayed in a standard view room I can?t say for sure, but I feel like I wouldn?t want to stay here without a view of the savanna. ?Maybe I can be proven wrong since this deluxe resort doesn?t come cheaply and I?ll want to give myself a bit of a discount by staying in a standard view on a future stay.

Apparently readers of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World agree with my assessment since 94% of those surveyed said they would stay here again! ?What do you think of the Animal Kingdom Lodge? ?Did you love your stay there or maybe you much prefer another location? ?Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Business Presentations and the ESL Executive ? Speak Clear Blog

Presenting is tough. ?It requires steady nerves, a lot of?preparation, and good non-verbal communication. ?If the presenter?s native tongue is not English, the challenge is even greater. ?If this scenario fits you, consider these few tips:

1) Take your time when presenting, and always take a break after each thought group. ?Breaking after each thought will allow your audience time to register what you are saying, and it will allow you more time to think about how to articulate the next phrase.

2) If your English is very weak, write out the speech, and practice it with a coach, or a friend who speaks English well. ?This is not ideal, it?s usually best to speak from bullet points and keep things loose, but if you are having a very hard time being understood, it?s important to really think about your phraseology before the speech.

3) ?Use simple words! ?I?ll say it again. ?Use simple words! ?This is good public speaking craft whether or not your native tongue is English.

4) ?Finally, keep in mind that many executives in New York City are not native speakers, and are in the same boat as you. ?There?s no reason to freak out because your English is a little rough. ?Just take your time, use simple words, write out the speech if necessary, and you?ll be on your way to speaking success!

Women get less information on post-cancer fertility

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Cancer treatment can sometimes lead to infertility, but young women are less likely than young men to be informed of that risk, a new study suggests.

Swedish researchers found that of nearly 500 cancer survivors ages 18 to 45, most men -- 80 percent -- said their doctor had told them their chemotherapy could affect their future fertility.

But only 48 percent of women said the same, the team reports in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

What's more, women were far less likely to have received information about options for preserving their fertility. Only 14 percent said they did, versus 68 percent of men.

That gap, researchers say, is likely related to the fact that preserving fertility is more complicated in women than men, and the techniques for doing so are not as widely available.

But regardless, women should still be informed, said senior researcher Claudia Lampic, of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

"Even in cases when fertility preservation could not be performed, patients -- and in particular, women -- should be informed about their risk of decreased fertility and their risk of entering menopause prematurely," Lampic told Reuters Health in an email.

A range of cancer therapies can affect fertility. Some chemotherapy drugs, for instance, can damage a woman's eggs or a man's ability to produce normal sperm.

Radiation therapy near the reproductive organs, or to the brain, can also harm fertility, as can hormonal therapies for breast, prostate and certain other cancers.

"This study is yet (more) evidence of healthcare disparity when it comes to fertility preservation," said Dr. Kutluk Oktay, a post-cancer fertility expert who was not involved in the research.

Other studies have found that cancer patients' likelihood of getting fertility information varies based on where they live, or even by medical center, explained Oktay, who directs the division of reproductive medicine and infertility at New York Medical College in Valhalla.

"Not only there are tremendous differences between geographical areas as to who receives fertility preservation information and treatment, but there seems to be a gender gap as well," Oktay said.

He agreed that it's likely related to differences in how male and female fertility are preserved.

Men can have their sperm frozen and banked before cancer treatment -- which is a relatively quick, simple process, though there is a cost.

According to the American Cancer Society, the cost of sperm banking typically tops $1,500, which includes three sperm donations and a few years of storage. Insurance often does not cover fertility preservation for cancer patients.

For women, the most common way to preserve fertility is to have in vitro fertilization to create embryos, which are then frozen and banked. It's also possible to freeze a woman's eggs or ovarian tissue, but those techniques are still considered experimental and it's not clear how well they work.

The total cost of those procedures can run from $8,000 to $24,000, and they are less widely available than sperm banking.

Another concern with women is that harvesting eggs generally means using hormonal treatments to stimulate the ovaries. Since that raises a woman's estrogen levels, women with breast or uterine cancer have traditionally not been offered embryo or egg freezing.

That is changing, however, said Oktay -- who has developed new regimens for stimulating egg production that do not boost women's estrogen levels.

But they are only just coming into use.

"The options are out there," Oktay said. "But the utility is still patchwork right now."

The current findings are based on 484 patients who had chemotherapy for leukemia, lymphoma, or breast, testicular or ovarian cancers between 2003 and 2007.

Things might be different now, Lampic's team notes, since there have been advances in fertility preservation for female cancer patients.

Recommendations from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) call for doctors to address the possibility of fertility problems in all reproductive-age patients before starting cancer treatment, and to be ready to talk about options like embryo-freezing.

But it's been clear for some time that those discussions may or may not take place. According to Oktay, "there are definitely disparities" among cancer centers. He said ASCO is working on new education materials to help ensure that more doctors can talk about the issue.

A recently published U.S. survey of women diagnosed with cancer when they were 40 or younger found that more than half said they still wanted to have children at the time of their diagnosis. (See Reuters Health story of March 26, 2012).

For now, Oktay said, if a cancer patient is concerned about future fertility, and her doctor does not bring up the issue, it's time to ask questions.

"Be proactive, and ask ?Will this treatment cause problems with my fertility?'" he advised.

If your doctor is not comfortable with fertility issues, Oktay added, you can ask for a referral to someone who is.

Lampic agreed. "Women with cancer who wish to have children in the future should definitively bring up this issue with their doctors and healthcare providers in general."
