Chirk golfers welcome first lady president

A GOLFER has put herself in the history books by becoming her club?s first ever lady president.

Jill Medcalf, 57, has taken up her symbolic position with Chirk Golf Club.

Mrs Medcalf, a former lady captain, has become a well-established figure around the 20-year-old club.

?I am extremely honoured to become the first woman to be our president,? said Mrs Medcalf.
?The club very much believes in equal opportunities and everyone has been very supportive towards me.
?The post of president is by invitation of the committee and subject to approval by members.
?The club is very friendly, everyone gets on with each other and is well mixed,? she added.

Mrs Medcalf, from Bangor on Dee, says it is fairly rare for a woman to be president of a golf club but has played down suggestions she is a role model for other female players.

?It is not unheard of for a woman to be president but it doesn?t happen very often,? she said.
?I believe though there are better female role models in terms of the quality of golf they can play and the fact they play professionally.?

In her role for the next two years, which she will combine with her job as a solicitor, Mrs Medcalf will be involved in liaising with course management on the club?s behalf and helping ensure all sections of the club run as smoothly as possible.
Mrs Medcalf, who is originally from Warwickshire, is married to Michael and has two sons, Robert, 28, and Tony, 26.

The keen sportswoman first dabbled with golf in her 20s but did not begin playing on a regular basis until the late 1990s, when her love affair with Chirk Golf Club began.
She has managed to halve her golfing handicap from 36 to 18 and is keen not to let her new role prevent her from spending time on the greens.

?I?m keen to still be able to get on the course and play,? she said.
?Being president is about being a figurehead really, so I am hopeful I can play as much as I can, while also carrying on with my work."
