Organ donor recipients ride with Donate Life in the 2013 Rose Parade

Millions of people will be watching the Rose Parade on New Years Day.

Some from the streets of the parade route, others in the warmth of their home.

To most of them it's a tradition, a celebration of another year passed.

But to the Riepl family, it will be a culmination of all they have triumphantly overcome the past two years.

At just 38 years old, Kevin Riepl is a heart transplant recipient. He will be joining about 30 other organ donor recipients, family members of organ donors and living donors on the Donate Life float as his wife and twin sons watch from the sideline.

"I was selected by Cedars-Sinai," Riepl says of how he landed the opportunity to be in the parade.

"They mentioned that we were a very inspiring family to them, to the nurses and everything, so when it came time to nominate somebody, they nominated me for it. I was honored, I couldn't believe it."

Just two years ago Riepl was a normal 36-year-old working as a music composer for film and video games. He lived a healthy life in Winnetka as a vegetarian and worked out multiple times a week.

Then in October 2010 he suddenly suffered heart failure.

Unbeknownst to his doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, he had a rare tumor above his adrenal gland causing his heart to fail.

They put him on a left ventricular assist device (an LVAD) to help pump blood through his body. But by the end of May 2011 they decided he would need

a heart transplant.

Within 30 days of being put on the list, he received the gift of a new heart.

Riepl's participation in the Rose Parade is his first time speaking out publicly for organ donation.

"I'm honored to do that because I'm extremely thankful for the whole organ donor association and the process - Donate Life and One Legacy," Riepl says. "I'm happy to go represent that."

Donate Life is an organization committed to promoting organ, eye and tissue donation while One Legacy is a local organ and tissue recovery organization.

Both, along with dozens of similar organizations across the nation, join together to create the Donate Life float every year.

"We take great pride in being the most inspiring float entry in the parade year after year," says Bryan Stewart, One Legacy's Vice President of Communications and chairman of Donate Life's Rose Parade Float Committee.

"That has a lot to do with our purpose in the parade which is to honor donors and to celebrate what the gift of life makes possible and to motivate people around the country to register as donors."

The theme of the parade is "Oh, the Places You'll Go" by Dr. Seuss.

The float committee took that theme and applied it to people who have been touched by organ and tissue donation.

"These are people who have lost loved ones. These are people who yesterday they might have died and now they are alive and now they can breath," Stewart says.

"So basically our whole story is about how we experience the highest of highs and the lowest of lows and everywhere in-between, kind of like a roller coaster. So we wanted to apply that to what we're all about which is a place of loving each other and caring for each other."

The result is a gorgeous float design of multiple hearts linked together like a roller coaster with 72 memorial portraits of deceased donors from all over the country pictured on the base of the float.

Joining Riepl as a rider is former Anaheim Angels infielder David Eckstein and his brother Rick Eckstein - their family has been ravaged by kidney disease and the latter donated his kidney to another brother.

Leilah Dowsari, the first female newborn to ever receive a heart transplant, will also be riding the float. Dowsari is now 26 years old living in Loma Linda and expecting her second child.

All of the riders are sponsored by an organization affiliated with Donate Life, like Cedars-Sinai.

The hospital nominated Riepl for a number of reasons, says Dr. Jaime Moriguchi, one of Riepl's doctors.

"He's just an amazing guy, and he had a remarkable will to live," Moriguchi says. "He's very inspirational to his kids, to us. He epitomizes what a heart transplant can do for someone - to bring them back to their life."

Though Cedars-Sinai has one of the largest heart transplant programs in the U.S. - Moriguchi says they will probably hit about 100 transplants this year - they still have about 60 to 80 people waiting for a heart, he says.

That's why Donate Life's campaign to raise awareness of donation is so important.

"We don't have enough donors," Moriguchi says. "Without the donors, we cannot do what we do."

Riepl doesn't know much about the man who's heart he received, only that he was a 34-year-old male.

But both he and his wife Tracy are grateful that the donor family agreed to the donation, giving Riepl the gift of life to spend another year with his family.

"I got really emotional when our boys started kindergarten this year, and I took a picture of him with them at the drop-off line at school," Tracy says.

"Had our donor family not said yes... it's like, we don't know who they are, but my feeling is whoever you are, where ever you are, thank you because he's here to share this milestone with me. Organ donation not only saved him, it saved my family."

Internet marketers are under more pressure than ever to deliver high quality leads to the sales folks.? That, coupled with the continued role of social media, remains a challenge to most.

2013

It sounds like a broken record; we need to generate more traffic, enhance our brand, improve content, increase conversions, target better, figure out this social media thing, prove ROI, and more.? For B2B firms, lack of staffing and resources is the number one challenge to marketing success as noted on the chart below.

sherpachallenges

Let?s get more granular, and review some internet marketing 2013 resolutions that you can optimize now:

Planning

  • Really understand your target audience; why they buy; what pains they have; why they need your product or service; perform better buyer persona research
  • Re-evaluate your firm?s value proposition; what makes you different, how do you communicate your uniqueness;? have a white board meeting with your executive team, and reassure what you sell and how you sell it is on target

Search Engine Optimization

  • Update your SEO strategy; re-evaluate the keywords your buyers use to find you; and make content adjustments to reflect those keywords.
  • Stop the automated link building schemes.? Utilize a PR professional to begin pitching unique content to high quality blogs and online content websites.? This is the new SEO; I call it ?relationship SEO?

Paid Search-Pay-per-Click

  • Really understand the search terms people use to find you and click your ad. Review ?Matched search query? reports to reassure your keywords are aligned to your products; then adjust and take advantage of negative keywords.
  • Go through each campaign, and take advantage of the following- the integration of analytics website metrics with Adwords, Sitelinks, automated bidding rules, keyword insights, etc.? Many new features in Adwords as well as Bing.? Understand them, and increase your paid search effectiveness

Conversion Architecture

  • Test landing pages for conversion. i.e. headlines, calls-to-action statements, offers, etc.? By utilizing A/B tests, you can significantly increase landing page conversion rates.? And, keep those form fields to a minimum
  • Reassure that when audiences click your ads to get to your landing pages, include trust factor content such as testimonials, case studies, association logos, and a privacy policy link.
  • Take advantage of responsive design for your website, or at least, insure that your website and landing pages are mobile friendly.? The future awaits, and it?s mobile.

Online Display

  • Improve efficiency and increase message reach by considering buying campaigns via a DSP (demand side platform), by taking advantage of real-time bidding and 3rd-party data for better targeting
  • A must for increasing conversions- utilize retargeting or remarketing to bring audiences back to your website or landing page, with a special offer just for them.

Video Marketing

  • Video is a proven marketing tactic that increases engagement and conversions.? Include video on your website and landing page, and let me see your service in action; include motion graphics as well as a powerful voice to attract attention.
  • Utilize event tracking within Google analytics to measure video plays; in fact use event tracking to measure all of your content downloads and other website activity.

Social Media

  • If you?re not actively posting content, engaging prospects, and measuring your activity; readdress your needs and priorities- either rethink your strategy or outsource, but prospects don?t like to see limited Twitter use, or a blog updated rarely.?? Think about it.
  • Are you measuring your social activity correctly?? I recently did a blog post on social media measurement and analytics.? You need to prove that your efforts are improving, or time to optimize. Read about?social media measurement?here.

Content Strategy

  • Assess all of your white papers and content assets.? Are they targeting the right audiences?? What are your content goals?? Review your editorial calendars and content mapping.? Have a plan to promote this content via search, display, and social.? We can help you with this.
  • On the chart above, firms have challenges in developing the right content.? For 2013 review your internal sources, and if necessary, consider outsourcing content strategy, which include not just the planning and writing, but the promotional and SEO elements of content marketing as well.

Analytics

  • Really understand the value of Google Analytics; take advantage of the multitude of reports and advanced audience segmentations.? Why?? Only with these tools can you really determine the effectiveness of your website once you define your conversion goals, and your metrics for success.
  • Finally, just don?t review the data without having an action plan for improvement.? It?s not what the numbers say; it?s how you utilize those numbers to increase conversions and revenue.? Right?

Well, that ends a brief checklist for your?2013 inbound marketing resolutions.??This is just the tip of the iceberg, but if you?re not consistently optimizing lead generation, you?re not doing your job.? Let?s grow in 2013.? Take the steps to improve your successes.

What steps are you taking to optimize in 2013?

Early cognitive problems documented among those who eventually get Alzheimer's

Dec. 28, 2012 ? People who study or treat Alzheimer's disease and its earliest clinical stage, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), have focused attention on the obvious short-term memory problems. But a new study suggests that people on the road to Alzheimer's may actually have problems early on in processing semantic or knowledge-based information, which could have much broader implications for how patients function in their lives.

Terry Goldberg, PhD, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and director of neurocognition at the Litwin Zucker Center for Research in Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset, NY, said that clinicians have observed other types of cognitive problems in MCI patients but no one had ever studied it in a systematic way. Many experts had noted individuals who seemed perplexed by even the simplest task. In this latest study, published in this month's issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry, investigators used a clever series of tests to measure a person's ability to process semantic information.

Do people with MCI have trouble accessing different types of knowledge? Are there obvious semantic impairments that have not been picked up before? The answer was "yes."

In setting out to test the semantic processing system, Dr. Goldberg and his colleagues needed a task that did not involve a verbal response. That would only confuse things and make it harder to interpret the results. They decided to use size to test a person's ability to use semantic information to make judgments between two competing sets of facts. "If you ask someone what is bigger, a key or an ant, they would be slower in their response than if you asked them what is bigger, a key or a house," explained Dr. Goldberg. The greater the difference in size between two objects, the faster a person -- normal or otherwise -- can recognize the difference and react to the question.

Investigators brought in 25 patients with MCI, 27 patients with Alzheimer's and 70 cognitively fit people for testing. They found large differences between the healthy controls and the MCI and Alzheimer's patients. "This finding suggested that semantic processing was corrupted," said Dr. Goldberg. "MCI and AD (Alzheimer's disease) patients are really affected when they are asked to respond to a task with small size differences."

They then tweaked the task by showing pictures of a small ant and a big house or a big ant and a small house. This time, the MCI and AD patients did not have a problem with the first part of the test -- they were able to choose the house over the ant when asked what was bigger. But if the images were incongruent -- the big ant seemed just as big as the small house -- they were confused, they answered incorrectly or took longer to arrive at a response.

Patients with MCI were functioning somewhere between the healthy people and those with AD. "When the decision was harder, their reaction time was slower," he said.

Would this damaged semantic system have an effect on everyday functions? To answer this question, investigators turned to the UCSD Skills Performance Assessment scale, a tool that they have been using in MCI and AD patients that is generally used to identify functional deficits in patients with schizophrenia. The test taps a person's ability to write a complex check or organize a trip to the zoo on a cold day.

This is actually a good test for figure out whether someone has problems with semantic knowledge. Semantic processing has its seat in the left temporal lobe. "The semantic system is organized in networks that reflect different types of relatedness or association," the investigators wrote in their study. "Semantic items and knowledge have been acquired remotely, often over many repetitions, and do not reflect recent learning."

Dr. Goldberg said the finding is critically important because it may be possible to strengthen these semantic processing connections through training. "It tells us that something is slowing down the patient and it is not episodic memory but semantic memory," he said. They will continue to study these patients over time to see if these semantic problems get worse as the disease advances.

In an accompanying editorial, David P. Salmon, PhD, of the Department of Neurosciences at the University of California in San Diego, said that the "semantic memory deficit demonstrated by this study adds confidence to the growing perception that subtle decline in this cognitive domain occurs in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment. Because the task places minimal demands on the effortful retrieval process, overt word retrieval, or language production, it also suggests that this deficit reflects an early and gradual loss of integrity of semantic knowledge."

He added that a "second important aspect of this study is the demonstration that semantic memory decrements in patients with mild cognitive impairment may contribute to a decline in the ability to perform usual activities of daily living."

NASA Unveils E-books on Hubble, Webb Space Telescopes

NASA has just released two free e-books about the Hubble Space Telescope and its not-yet-launched successor, with interactive features that let readers watch a galaxy collision or manipulate a telescope model between pages, agency officials say.

The Hubble Space Telescope launched in 1990 and has a mission lifetime through at least 2013. The space-based observatory has supplied some of the most dazzling visible-light images of distant cosmic objects, which are featured in "Hubble Space Telescope: Discoveries."

The James Webb Space Telescope, which will be almost three times the size of Hubble, has been designed to work best at infrared wavelengths in order to study the very distant universe, looking for the first stars and galaxies that ever emerged. The e-book, "Webb Space Telescope: Science Guide," explains the technology behind the mission, which is slated to launch in 2018.

"These new e-books from NASA will allow people to discover Hubble and Webb in a whole new way ? both the science and the technology behind building them," Amber Straughn, an astrophysicist on the Webb telescope project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in a statement. "They collect all of the amazing resources about these two observatories in an excellent product that I think people will really enjoy."

The e-books are available at the Apple iBookstore or can be downloaded as a PDF here: http://hubblesite.org/ibooks/

56% of female university students get drunk in record time, Spanish study suggests

Dec. 28, 2012 ? Researchers from the HealthyFit group at the University of Vigo have studied university students' lifestyles; their analysis, which includes alcohol and illegal drug consumption habits, sport and food, concludes that most students indulge in unhealthy behaviour. One of the main results of the study points to the high consumption of alcohol.

"The amount drunk per unit of time is higher among women. In other words, even though male students drink more often, females do so more intensively in shorter periods of time, which is known as binge drinking," explained Jos? M? Cancela Carral, co-author of the study published by the Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Researchers randomly selected 985 students from different degree courses and in different years at the University of Vigo.

Of the females interviewed, 51.2% lead a sedentary lifestyle, while the percentage in males is 41.7%. When analysing students who maintain an appropriate level of physical activity, 38.6% of males do physical exercise, as opposed to only 20.9% of women.

"We were also surprised by the high consumption of illegal drugs among university students -- 44.9% of men and 30.9% of women -- which we understand could lead to significant future health problems, mainly related to the nervous system," underlined the researcher.

Anomalous attitudes to food were more evident among women (16.6%), although also present among men (8.8%). "However, the statistical analysis showed that this parameter depended on the degree the student was studying for," added Cancela. Such attitudes were much more common among those studying degrees related to education (19.2%) than among those studying courses related to health (6.3%).

Health network

Spanish universities set up a Healthy University Network in 2008, a project for healthy living for universities from all over Spain, the Spanish University Rectors' Association, the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport and some regional public health entities.

In the researcher's opinion, at many universities this network was nothing more than "a simple first step to get on the list and nothing else"; hence transversal content should be implemented in study plans related to food, physical exercise and healthy habits.

"In the light of the results, training and information courses are required in these areas, together with healthy leisure -- not just sports facilities -- to set up university guidance services for a healthy student lifestyle," concludes Cancela.

Genetic predisposition

A recent study published in the PNAS journal argues that the gene called RASGRF2 could be related to a predisposition to getting drunk.

According to scientists, this gene regulates the predisposition to drink excessive amounts of alcohol as it influences mesolimbic dopamine neuron activity, which is one of the ways dopamine is taken from one region of the brain to another.

Gunter Schumann, one of the main authors of the study, explained that even though we should not consider said gene to be the main cause -- as there are many environmental factors and other genes involved -- the study thereof helps to explain why some people are more vulnerable to alcohol than others.

South Africa president prefers people over pets

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? South Africa's president says a dog should not be man's best friend.

President Jacob Zuma made critical remarks about pet care that touch on sensitive race relations in South Africa, which was dominated by whites until apartheid was dismantled almost two decades ago, The Star newspaper reported Thursday.

The newspaper cited Zuma as saying in a speech Wednesday that the idea of having a pet is part of "white culture" and that people should focus on family welfare.

The president's office sought to clarify his remarks, saying he was encouraging "the previously oppressed African majority" to uphold its own culture. It also suggested the way in which the comments were reported, rather than the comments themselves, was divisive.

The president's remarks triggered a flurry of retorts from animal lovers on Twitter and other social media.

"Will I become 'more African' if I kick my dog, President Zuma," one person commented tartly.

Another lamented: "He keeps on dividing this country."

And another humorist wrote: "Well, that pretty much rules out that photo opportunity with Zuma, the Obamas, & their pet dog, Bo, in the White House."

The backdrop to the dog debate is the legacy of Western colonialism in Africa, as well as the bitter struggle against apartheid in South Africa that culminated in the first democratic elections in 1994. Poverty and economic imbalances remain a source of deep strain in the nation of 50 million.

During his speech to an appreciative crowd in KwaZulu-Natal, Zuma's home province, the president said people who love dogs more than people have a "lack of humanity" and that some people are trying in vain to "emulate whiteness," The Star reported.

"Even if you apply any kind of lotion and straighten your hair, you will never be white," he reportedly said.

In a statement, the South African presidency said Zuma was trying to "decolonize the African mind post-liberation" and enable people to take pride in their heritage and not feel pressure to adopt customs of minority cultures. Animals can be cared for, was the message, but not at the expense of people.

It said he gave examples of people loving animals more than other human beings ? letting a dog sit in the cab of a truck while a worker has to sit in the back in the rain, or rushing an animal to the veterinarian while ignoring sick relatives or workers.

Zuma has often said he seeks to protect South Africa's diversity and unify its disparate groups, but he has occasionally stirred controversy. In 2006, as deputy president, he said same-sex marriages, which are today protected under South African law, were "a disgrace to the nation and to God."

GotEngines.com announces its acquisition and importing of Hyundai Sonata engines for direct sale online and offline. More information can be found at this link: http://www.gotengines.com/blog/hyundai-engines-sales/hyundai-sonata-engines-sale.

This brand as well as Kia are now offered at reduced prices that are free of importation fees to customers. Theses motors are in preowned condition and receive thorough testing and evaluations before these are shipped to customers.

Foreign engines can be difficult to find online or through offline dealers due to the high costs involved to acquire these for sale. Some dealers do not have direct agreements with suppliers and pay additional fees to have a preowned motor in stock.

Distribution agreements are in place that allow faster and easier shipment to customers that use the GotEngines.com website.

The average domestic engine this is sold on the secondary market has between 90,000 and 135,000 miles on the block according to research. While these numbers do not provide indication of engine quality, the mileage ratios are different compared with those that are imported from foreign sources. Imports generally have 35,000 to 75,000 miles on the block although some dealers could have more or less.

The new imports that have been acquired for sale are ones that are on the lower end of the mileage spectrum to allow more car owners and motor installers in the U.S. and Canada to benefit. A new online quote system is helping to generate pricing entirely online for this inventory as well as the domestic inventory that is now in stock. This new measure is helping to eliminate the need to receive quotes by phone.

The in stock inventory can be searched online through the http://www.gotengines.com/blog homepage and complete warranty and shipping incentives are provided to help buyers make purchasing decisions.

About Got Engines

The Got Engines company was launched online in 2009 and now offers one of the largest preowned inventories of automotive, SUV and pickup truck engines that can be found online. By lowering pricing and improving warranty terms, this company has been able to extend its business operations into every U.S. state. Those that search for motors to purchase online use the online resources offered from the Got Engines website to find affordable motors. The lineup of Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, Hyundai and other import engines can be browsed online and ordered through the Internet or by toll free phone number.

Amicus treatment for Fabry disease fails in study

NEW YORK (AP) -- A potential treatment from Amicus Therapeutics and GlaxoSmithKline for Fabry disease, a rare disorder, missed its goals in late-stage testing, triggering a sell-off in Amicus' stock in after-hours trading.

Fabry disease is an enzyme disorder caused by the buildup of a type of fat in the body's cells. The fat can cause pain and damage the kidneys and nervous system, among other problems.

Amicus said Wednesday that six-month results from a late-stage study of migalastat missed the primary endpoint, but Amicus and its partner will continue to analyze the data and look forward to receiving 12-month results in the first half of next year. They intend to meet with the Food and Drug Administration once they have those additional results.

No drug-related serious adverse events related to the drug were observed.

The companies are also testing migalastat in a second late-stage clinical trial.

In July, Amicus of Cranbury, N.J., and GlaxoSmithKline, based in London, announced they were expanding their partnership for the drug, giving Amicus commercial rights to market any migalastat products in the U.S., while GlaxoSmithKline will market the drugs in all other countries. GlaxoSmithKline then agreed to pay Amicus $30 million upfront and up to $170 million if the drug advanced through clinical development, was approved, and reached sales targets.

Amicus Therapeutics shares plunged in late-trading, shedding half their value to $2.85, after closing at $5.77.

Military Judge Ignores Hasan's Beard

Ft. Hood massacre suspect Maj. Nidal Hasan made his initial appearance ??before the new judge assigned to his case, and for the first time in six months, the hearing did not turn into a fight over Hasan's full beard, 1200 WOAI news reports.

?

? Hasan is charged with killing 13 people and wounding 32 and faces the possibility of execution if convicted.? But his trial for the shooting spree at the post, which took place in November of 2009, has been delayed for six months due to the dispute over Hasan's beard, which is a violation of Army grooming regulations.

?

? Ft. Hood spokesman Chris Haug told 1200 WOAI news that the issue was passed over today after Col. Tara Osborn, the new judge, briefly asked Hasan about it.

?

? "She asked Hasan if he wore the beard of his own free will, and if he agreed to waive issues surrounding the beard," Haug said.? "Hasan asked both questions in the affirmative."

?

? Haug said Hasan also agreed not to contest his beard during the selection of a panel, the military term for the jury, which will hear his case.? Army prosecutors have argued that Hasan must shave because the officers who will make up the panel will look down on a fellow officer who appears 'out of uniform' during a court proceeding, and that could be grounds for an appeal of a guilty verdict.

?

? The top military appeals court earlier this month removed the previous judge who had handled the case from the beginning, claiming that he had shown indications of bias against Hasan.? One of the reasons the court cited was Col. Gregory Gross' constant criticism of Hasan for wearing the beard into the courtroom, repeatedly calling it 'disruptive' and holding Hasan in contempt of court and six times fining him $1,000.? Gross even threatened to have Hasan 'forcibly shaved' if he refused to shave.

?

? The court said there was no indication that Hasan's beard had disrupted the court proceedings, and said the issue of whether a soldier is out of uniform or is in violation of grooming restrictions is a matter for the post commander, not the trial judge.? The appeals court did not specifically rule on Hasan's request for an exemption to keep the beard, which he said he grew in line with the tenets of his Muslim faith.

?

? Haug says Osborn indicated a desire to get Hasan's court martial back on track, ordering the lawyers in the case to work through Christmas to come up with a trial schedule.

?

? "Osborn asked both parties to submit a proposed schedule to litigate these matters, which will begin in January of 2013," he said.

?

? Relatives of several of the victims of the massacre have complained that constant delays are denying them justice.

Helen Flanagan "in tears" as she defends gun Twitter picture after Connecticut massacre

Helen Flanagan "in tears" as she defends gun Twitter picture after Connecticut massacre

Helen Flanagan has defended her actions after she caused outrage with a recent tasteless photo she uploaded to Twitter.

The former Coronation Street actress - who's always posting new model shots for her 273,010 followers to see - courted controversy with a photo of herself holding a gun to her head.

She uploaded the snap on Monday - just three days after 26 people were shot dead in Connecticut.

America is still reeling from the tragedy caused by Adam Lanza, who shot 20 children and six adults before turning the gun on himself at Sandy Hook school in Newtown, Connecticut.

In Helen's photo, she poses in a black bra and holds a pistol to her head, in a shoot inspired by her icon Marilyn Monroe.

She wrote alongside the snap: "Head f***."

Helen has since removed the image and paid tribute to the victims of the massacre with a re-tweeted message on her page.

Nonetheless, the I'm A Celebrity star's tactless choice of photo was condemned by a father at the shrine of the victims in Connecticut.

He said: "It?s just ignorance when the eyes of the world are on what happened here, to be posing with a gun like that is insensitive and stupid."

Twitter users have also taken to the site to vent their anger about the photo.

One branded Helen an "insensitive b*tch" and another wrote: "You are sick & should be disgusted. cannot believe your stupid gun photo."

But Helen has this morning vehemently denied there was any bad taste behind the photo.

She tweeted, alongside a photo of a news article about the snap: "I am absolutely disgusted in this. Completely cruel. I will absolutely NOT stand for this kind of bullying.

"Anyone who knows me knows I have the biggest heart.... I feel really chocked up that's so cruel.

"Honestly I've got tears streaming down my face how can you do that to someone over something so tragic #feelsick can't believe I woke up to that."

Ways To Make The Internet Work For Your Business - Maynas Eric

Are you looking for information on Website marketing? The handy tips and information in this article are both easy to understand and implement.

Highlight the specialness of the product by including ?limited? in ads. When people get tired of what?s on offer at their local shops, they choose to shop online. They are looking for something that is different and unique. If you sell something unique, they know that they must buy it quickly while supplies last.

To make more money, you need more subscribers. Use a split test to determine which of two marketing strategies is more successful. For instance, show one landing page to 50 people, and another to 50 different people. You can then decide which works best by whichever receives more subscriptions.

TIP! Offering a return policy is often very important when it comes to Internet marketing. This helps give your customers security and shows that you stand by the quality of your product.

Building a squeeze page is one tactic for building your contact list. This encourages your site visitors to offer up their email address. You might want to offer a free promotional item in return for contact information. This provides them with something free and you can add them without any issues to your own list.

You need to research and treat Online marketing serious. Find an adviser who you trust and seek their assistance. People who know how to effectively market on the Internet often provide free tips or online tutorials for a nominal fee. You should thoroughly research your endeavor before deciding it is something you will stick with over the long haul. Although results may come slowly at first, the marketing will soon be well worth what you put into it.

Use viral videos to get huge numbers of visitors to your site. It may look easy, but building a video that goes viral takes a lot of creativity and out of the box thinking to drive that many views. If you are able to do this well, you will reap great results and have more success than you would with any other style of internet promotion campaign.

TIP! Load your site with information that is full and new. You want the information on your website to appear at the front of search engines, but you also want it to be original enough that you will bring in visitors.

It?s important to keep your website supplied with a steady stream of freshly updated content. If a person finds outdated information on your site, they?ll think that your business is struggling and you may lose that customer. Readers are attracted to a website that is updated frequently and easy to use.

Make a professional and interesting site your goal. What your website looks like, as well as the content it contains, will have a huge bearing on your degree of success. You want your visitors to stay around awhile, so you need to make the website eye-catching and interesting. Make sure your design engages your target audience so that they will spend more time browsing through it.

Be sensitive to how customers are reacting to your marketing materials so that you can better target future efforts. Watch responses on social networking sites and forums following your releases of events and promotions. These people will feel like they are valued if you follow their advice.

TIP! If you are working with a well-developed marketing plan, you will be aware of which products are the most profitable in your line. A good strategy is to use your best sellers to drive sales of complimentary and add-on products.

Be sure to include a strong, persuasive call to action in any email you send to your customers. Suggested actions could be visiting your website, subscribing to a newsletter, ordering a free e-book, purchasing a product or service, and so on. This also gives you a nice metric to track the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns.

Creating and maintaining a customer relationship management (CRM) database can aid your Website marketing efforts. Use it to identify past and present customers and their respective purchase history. Use this information to customize communication with them, and try to sell them products that are complementary to previous purchases.

Cross merchandising is a great way to increase revenue by offering similar items to customers who make a purchase. For instance, if you sell shirts on your site and a customer buys a Hawaiian shirt, send them links to the other Hawaiian shirts you sell. You can increase your sales by tailoring your product offerings to their purchasing trends.

TIP! Make your site accessible to people in many different countries. Making your site available in different languages can be very savvy.

In conclusion, you have been given some invaluable information about internet promotion. Apply the strategies that you think will best fit your company. Follow our advice and you will be one step closer to being an expert in this subject, as well as more profitable.

2 Things You Shouldn't Fear In Online Marketing - Internet Marketing ...

When you hear the term ?internet marketing?, does it make you cringe? When you hear the term ?search engine optimization?, does it leave you baffled? When you hear the term ?FTP? do you know what it?s all about? Well, all of these terms have to do with internet marketing, and they can help to take your business to the next level.

There?s no reason to fear all of these terms. You should embrace it - because they are the things that will bring you more sales and profits simply and easily. Don?t let the realm of online marketing leave you baffled.

These are the very things that will make you wealthy online - whether you believe it or not.

In today?s lesson, I want to share with you how some of these methods can make you wealthy online. There are many people online who are struggling to make a buck - but you can differentiate yourself from the pack by doing things that are truly effective. Let?s take a look at one of the things that you could be doing to boost your sales and profits immediately.

1) SEO

SEO (search engine optimization) is a pillar of internet marketing that is very important to the development of your business. If there was a ?location, location, location? rant on the internet, it would be applied to search engine marketing. The search engines change their algorithms all the time, so it?s in your best interest to learn how to stay on top of the search engines, and stay abreast on all of the latest changes and updates that occurs.

There are 3 major search engines online. You have Google (the largest), and then Yahoo, and then Bing. Google by far gets the most traffic, but you can still get great results with Yahoo?s and Bing?s search engine.

Google makes algorithm changes all the time, so it?s tough to stay on top of their search results. But I think that SEO is so essential that you need to use it in your business to stay on top of the marketplace.
Here?s another way to boost your sales and profits:

2) A mixture of marketing strategies

Never just rely on 1 source of traffic. You need to diversify your marketing efforts so that you can have other strategies to fall back on. A traffic source can dry up pretty quickly, and you don?t want to be in the mist of it all, and experience business failure because it didn?t bring you the sales and profits that you had been hoping for.

Consider paid strategies, but also consider free marketing strategies also. You have Youtube, social media, forums, blogging, article marketing, SEO, referral marketing, and lots more. This is something that you will definitely want to do if you want to have the utmost success as possible in your internet business.

Take these 2 tips and use them in your online business right away. Not only are they effective, but they will be here to stay for a long, long time. Consider them ?evergreen? marketing strategies because they work in good and bad times online.

Good luck with using these strategies to boost your online income today.

Egypt's public prosecutor resigns amid protests

Egypt's public prosecutor quit under pressure from his opponents in the judiciary, drawing an angry response from the Muslim Brotherhood ahead of a second round vote on a divisive draft-constitution.

By Yasmine Saleh,?Reuters, Shaimaa Fayed,?Reuters / December 18, 2012

Riot police stand guard outside the Supreme Judicial House in Cairo, before the resignation of Public Prosecutor Talaat Ibrahim December 17. Ibrahim, Egypt's new public prosecutor appointed by President Mohamed Mursi last month, has resigned from his post, judicial sources and the main state newspaper al-Ahram said on Monday.

Egypt's public prosecutor resigned under pressure from his opponents in the judiciary, dealing a blow to President Mohamed Mursi and drawing an angry response on Tuesday from the Islamist leader's supporters in the Muslim Brotherhood.

Seeking to keep pressure on Mursi, the main opposition coalition staged protests against an Islamist-backed draft constitution that has divided Egypt but which looks set to be approved in the second round of a referendum on Saturday.

A few hundred protesters made their way through the streets of Cairo chanting "Revolution, revolution, for the sake of the constitution" and calling on Mursi to "Leave, leave, you coward".

But as the protest got under way, the numbers were well down on previous demonstrations.

Mursi obtained a 57 percent "yes" vote for the constitution in a first round of the referendum last weekend, state media said, less than he had hoped for.

The opposition, which says the law is too Islamist, will be emboldened by the result but is unlikely to win the second round, to be held in districts seen as even more sympathetic towards Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood.

Protesters broke into cheers when the public prosecutor appointed by Mursi last month announced his resignation late on Monday.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the Muslim Brotherhood, which propelled Mursi to power in elections in June, said the enforced resignation of public prosecutor Talaat Ibrahim was a "crime".

The Supreme Judiciary Council, which governs the country's judicial system, should refuse to accept the prosecutor's resignation, the Brotherhood said.

Further signs of opposition to Mursi emerged when a judges' club urged its members not to supervise Saturday's vote. But the call is not binding and balloting is expected to go ahead.

If the constitution passes next weekend, national elections can take place early next year, something many hope will help end the turmoil that has gripped Egypt since the fall of Hosni Mubarak nearly two years ago.

The National Salvation Front opposition coalition said there were widespread voting violations in the first round and called for protests to "bring down the invalid draft constitution".

The Ministry of Justice said it was appointing a group of judges to investigate complaints of voting irregularities around the country.

Nokia Lumia 800 gets first taste of Windows Phone 7.8

Nokia starts pushing WP 78 to Dutch Lumia 800 users

An official Windows Phone 7.8 rollout to Nokia devices like the Lumia 510, 800 and 900 seemed all but inevitable after it popped up on third party Nokia ROM tool NaviFirm, then a couple days later on Nokia's own servers. Now, Dutch site WP7.nl is reporting that Nokia has started rolling it out in earnest to the Lumia 800 from the Zune desktop software, at least on that side of the pond. Provided your device is up-to-date, you may soon receive a certain "Nokia update," which will then be followed by four larger downloads. When the dust settles, you'll see a newfangled splash screen, customization options and Xbox Tile (among numerous other changes), heralding your not-completely-abandoned handset's arrival nearly into the Windows Phone 8 era. Check the translated source for more details.

Behind appearance of unity among Chavez allies, some Venezuelans see power struggles brewing

CARACAS, Venezuela - Hugo Chavez's most influential allies are projecting an image of unity while the president recovers from cancer surgery in Cuba, standing side-by-side and pledging to uphold his socialist movement no matter what happens.

But with Chavez's outlook increasingly darkening, some Venezuelans believe power struggles are brewing between ambitious lieutenants long in the president's shadow.

One-man rule has been the glue holding together Chavez's movement, and he hadn't groomed any clear successor until he surprised Venezuelans with the announcement last weekend that if cancer forced him from office he wanted his vice-president, Nicolas Maduro, to take over.

The president's diverse "Chavismo" movement includes groups from radical leftists to moderates, and long-hidden divisions could flare, at least behind-the-scenes, if Chavez is no longer in charge.

"In politics, everything is possible," said Gustavo Chourio, a bookseller in downtown Caracas, adding that he expects conflict between Maduro and National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello.

Maduro leads a civilian-political wing that is considered to be closely aligned with Cuba's communist government. Cabello, a former military officer who is more moderate, is thought to have strong ties to the military ? a relationship he highlighted when he spoke at a Mass for Chavez held at Venezuela's largest military base.

"Maduro doesn't have influence with those in the military. Diosdado has the influence," Chourio said.

Throughout the nearly 14 years Chavez has been president, his allies have always deferred to and parroted him.

Chourio said he believes Chavismo has grown so strong it will persist without Chavez. But he predicts Maduro and Cabello will have a reckoning and may end up cutting deals.

"Those two will have to work it out to guarantee the country's stability," said Chourio, a longtime Chavez supporter.

Analysts agree that political battles are likely, if not inevitable.

"It is almost certain that an intense power struggle is already under way within Chavismo," said Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue think-tank in Washington.

Shifter said key figures in the president's camp, including Maduro and Cabello, have long had to suppress personal ambition as Chavez monopolized decision-making.

"With Chavez no longer on the scene, and the power vacuum exposed, the situation becomes extremely unpredictable," Shifter said. "The fact that Maduro is Chavez's designated successor gives him the upper hand for the time being, but that is unlikely to last long. The others vying for power are wily and ruthless. From the outset, the Chavez regime has been about power ? including lots of money ? and now all of that is up for grabs."

Maduro and Cabello, for their part, showed a united front this week by appearing together at events along with other Cabinet ministers and military commanders. Speaking alongside Cabello and Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez on Wednesday, Maduro said: "We're more united than ever."

The 58-year-old Chavez underwent his fourth cancer-related operation Tuesday after announcing that tests had found the illness had come back despite previous operations, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The government said Thursday that Chavez suffered complications in surgery but that he was recovering favourably.

If Chavez were to die or be unable to continue in office, the constitution says new elections should be held within 30 days. If that happened before Chavez's Jan. 10 swearing-in, the president of the National Assembly would take over temporarily until elections were held.

Before his surgery, Chavez acknowledged such a scenario. He said on television Saturday night, with Maduro and Cabello seated beside him, that if he was unable to continue as president, Maduro should be elected to take his place and lead the socialist movement.

That appearance by Chavez, during a quick trip home after 10 days of treatment in Havana, was an indication that jostling for power had already begun, said Adam Isacson, an analyst at the Washington Office on Latin America.

"If there were consensus, Chavez would not have found it necessary to fly home from Havana last weekend, in the middle of delicate medical treatments, to publicly name a successor," Isacson said.

In the short-term, he said, Chavez's allies know it's in their best interest to fall in behind Maduro if a new election is called, and the president's endorsement could give Maduro enough clout to lead for months or years.

"Instability could come later, if President Chavez dies and the new leader of Chavismo lacks his charisma and ability to hold the coalition together," Isacson said. "At that point, Chavismo would be likely to splinter."

Maduro, a one-time bus driver and former foreign minister, has stepped into the void during Chavez's absence. On Thursday night, his voice was hoarse as he spoke at a political rally, pledging not to give in to the country's "bourgeoisie."

"I swear to you ... we will never betray the Venezuelan people!" he said, adding: "Together we're going to defend the peace, stability and the future of our children, with our own lives if necessary!"

But Maduro will find it difficult to control the various factions in Chavez's socialist party, said Vicente Torrijos, a political analyst at El Rosario University in Bogota, Colombia. "Maduro doesn't have that charisma, nor the ability, much less the political capital," he said.

Torrijos expects the fervour inspired by Chavez to continue, but he predicts differences among the president's followers will eventually "disrupt the revolution." The military is likely to "influence political decisions more and more," he said.
